Newspaper job cuts hit this guy.

The utter shock is just wonderful. How will Lee ever cover the griz again without #1 Fanboy???

Lee, like the landline, just keeps slowly fading away. Sign of the times. I miss the days when the local paper (and others) was on countertop of every bar and cafe. I’m sure everyone working for Lee is either nervous or making a backup plan. There are a lot of industries on the verge of becoming obsolete.
Yep. Makes me glad I chose mining for my career path, it's as stable as an industry as ever.

I am a little shocked at the callous response in this thread. Regardless of his talent (or lack thereof), it's low to make fun of someone losing their job...

I've only ever "celebrated" one termination in my workplace, and that was an HR director that was as universally unliked as anyone I have ever known. And it wasn't so much a celebration as it was a relief.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Agreed, we beg for coverage yet celebrate the loss of someone covering the big sky weather we like how he did it or not, it is sad for him personally. It will be interesting to see how they cover the Griz. Missoula, Butte, and Billings seem to have had good local coverage if HS sports, compare that to Great Falls. Tribune cut local sportswriters and could not cover anything outside city limits this year and barely that.

I'm not celebrating him losing his job. I think it's funny that his ego is so big that his first thought is that without him the company will no longer cover the team with the (at worst, second) largest following in the state.

I wonder if they'll essentially turn the local sports desks into one year/season jobs. Start in August, cover the football season, basketball season and possible the spring football schedule, and then hope you did well enough to get a job in a larger market over the summer. Rinse. Repeat.

It's unfortunate that local/state sports coverage struggles in a 95%+ online model. We're lucky there is a free source at all for the amount of high school and college coverage Montana gets.

Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!

I heard about Lee's staff struggles a few months ago. One article I read said they were forcing unpaid furloughs. Not sure how that works. But now they're just laying people off I guess.

I have heard that the AP will pick up local stories and run them nationally. I have no idea how that works, but curious if there is a similar option for Lee Newspapers. Skyline does a great job covering the Cats and Gris. Can Lee run those articles and compensate Skyline each time? Maybe that is more cost effective than having a person on staff.

I don't like his writing but I took his comment as a jab at employer. Saying his position was eliminated which if that is true who does do the coverage. If they assign to another sports writer to cover multiple things lime HS local, griz that is aleady there he was laid off. If they hire someone new then he was fired. So it is a good question

My guess ia Skyline will be doing it for Lee, so good on Coulter. He does an excellent job for both schools.

Unless something changed, AP has been writing stories off the stat sheets. Might be different for playoffs.

I suspect AI (artificial intelligence) can write articles from stat sheets as well.

I had ChatGTP write an article about Sprinkle getting hired days before the announcement and it was surprisingly pretty decent, but got some facts wrong.

On March 28th, 2022, it was announced that Danny Sprinkle, the head coach of the Montana State men's basketball team, was leaving to take the same position at Utah State University. This news came as a shock to many fans and followers of the Montana State program, as Sprinkle had just finished his third season as head coach and had led the Bobcats to a winning record and a postseason appearance.

For Sprinkle, the decision to leave Montana State was not an easy one. In a statement released by the university, he expressed his gratitude to the Montana State community and his players, saying, "I want to thank Montana State University, the Bozeman community, and most importantly our players for an incredible three years. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to lead this program and to work alongside such great people."

However, he also acknowledged the allure of the opportunity at Utah State, saying, "As a coach, you always want to be challenged and take on new opportunities. Utah State has a rich basketball tradition and a passionate fan base. I am honored to become a part of that legacy and am excited to get to work."

Utah State is certainly a step up in terms of program prestige and resources, as the Aggies have a long history of success in college basketball. They have made 21 NCAA tournament appearances and have won 17 conference championships, most recently the Mountain West Conference tournament in 2022. Additionally, the program has a strong tradition of player development, with numerous players going on to successful professional careers.

For Sprinkle, this presents an exciting challenge and a chance to prove himself at a higher level. He has already shown his ability to build a winning program at Montana State, taking the Bobcats from a 15-17 record in his first season to a 19-10 record and a postseason appearance in his third season. He also has experience coaching at the Division I level as an assistant at Cal State Northridge, Washington State, and UC Riverside.

One of Sprinkle's biggest challenges at Utah State will be continuing the program's recent success under former head coach Craig Smith, who left to take the same position at the University of Utah. In his three seasons at Utah State, Smith led the Aggies to a 74-24 record, two NCAA tournament appearances, and a share of the Mountain West regular-season title.

However, Sprinkle's experience as a head coach and his familiarity with the Mountain West conference should serve him well in this regard. He will also have the benefit of inheriting a talented roster, led by sophomore guard Rollie Worster and junior forward Justin Bean.

Overall, Sprinkle's hiring at Utah State is a win for both him and the program. Utah State gets a proven head coach who has shown an ability to build a winning program, and Sprinkle gets a chance to prove himself at a higher level and continue the success of a program with a strong tradition. It will be interesting to see how he navigates the challenges ahead and if he can lead the Aggies to continued success.

I recommended that the Gazette contract with Colter for MSU coverage a couple years ago. They didn't respond so don't know if they tried or not. Noted that recently the Gazette published a pretty good and long article from MSU sports info.

Can't make up my mind as to which is better - 55-21 or 48-14, but 34-11 will do.

Remember this guy? Brennan took the MSU athletic director job before quitting soon after. Leon was then hired after Brennan bailed. Looks like MSU dodged a bullet with him.

Montana State is very fortunate to have Leon Costello, rather than Brennan. Sometimes Karma works in your favor. Sadly it will come back and bite you when Leo gets poached like Choate/Sprinkle. Its the name of the game when you are excellent at what you do.

I forgot about that, it was like a semi-awkward introductory press conference, his family on stage with him, and then 7 days later he was like "naw I'm good".

I mean it's not a huge scandal but we ended up with Leon Costello so talk about opposite directions we could have gone.

Sounds like it worked, almost:

The trip sheds new light on ISU Athletics’ relationship with Rossi, who quickly became a multimillionaire after his company emerged as a COVID-19 testing giant during the pandemic. Less than two months after the trip together, Rossi pledged a $3 million donation to Athletics’ new Indoor Practice Facility. ISU won’t say if that money ever materialized; Rossi was indicted on federal tax fraud charges weeks after the pledge, and a judge restricted his ability to spend money. Rossi and his company, Reditus, remain under federal investigation.
