Mr. Cole, if you're half the academic student and running back you say you are, then you will come to MSU and prove it to the Big Sky Conference and the final 16 in the playoffs. 4.0 GPA and over 1700 yards total offense?? Step up to the plate and hit a grand slam or shut up. You can't handle the challenge (or the truth)!! Aloha.

Good Post Iaa. I follow kickers, and you are right on the mark. I've posted before that Bolton and Carpenter had similar stats in HS, Bolton a little better with FG's/PAT's, Carpenter a little better with kickoffs. These two rivaled and competed all through HS. Bolton did this with a receiver injury his HS senior year, injury should have affected distance, yet proves he has heart and can play injured. I heard rumors from last years preseason tryouts that support your assessment of the lack of confidence instilled in kickers. What is interesting is that Carpenter does not do good in practices, but comes through game time. Hauck admitted last year he was less than impressed with Friz kickers in preseason, yet gave Carpenter the vote of confidence, no immediate threat to pull him with one miss. Look like it turned out to be a good coaching strategy. I expect with a healthy Bolton, we will have a kicking rival beetween kickers at UM/MSU, just as these great kickers battled in HS. It comes down to how you manage the player, the talent is there.iaafan wrote:
The defense has question marks all over the place and so do the kickers (Bolton and Fisher). It was mind-boggling that an MSU defense could blow a 21-point lead vs. EW. Kramer has to settle down re: the kickers. He has them scared to kick in practice let alone the games. He has to give the job to whoever he has confidence in and then show some faith by not yanking him after one missed kick or KO out of bounds. They are more worried about him than the kick they are about to attempt. Kramer is MSU's worst enemy regarding the kicker. This should be established in non-conf games. It could all work out in those areas, but until they play a game it's anybody's guess.
As for defense, should be interesting to see how this develops. Secondary could be/should be/must be strong. Who plays where, will be a big factor. Again, I think the talent is there, comes down to how the players are managed. As a note, what do we hear on Tyler Lulay, Receiver or Safety?

We're soon to have our second alumni long snapper playing on Sundays; are we just snakebit? I noticed this year the Frontier Conference, overall, did not have the problems we had in the kicking game. Surely we have room for our all time kicker to help his son during the week just as Dusty got a lot of help last year...

Maybe Cole will end up staying at Oregon State after this incident. OSU bringing in Walker is the reason Cole decided to look elsewhere...
Gazette-Times reporters
Two Oregon State University football players will be "held out of team activities," according to OSU's athletics department, following their arrest for allegedly trying to rob a taxicab driver.
According to a Corvallis police report, the players — Jimtavis Walker and Star Paddock — attempted to pay the Roadrunner Taxi driver with marijuana after they were driven to Walker's apartment from downtown Corvallis after the bars closed in the wee hours of Feb. 11. When the taxi driver refused the dope, the report said, the men offered to pay using a credit card.
"When they were finalizing the transaction, Star Paddock grabbed the credit card and the receipts and when the taxi driver got out of his car to stop him, he got shoved back down (into the car)," said Capt. Jon Sassaman.
When police arrived about 3 a.m., no one would answer the door of the apartment at 900 S.E. Centerpointe Drive, so the police obtained a search warrant and went in at 5:10 a.m., Sassaman said.
Inside, police found a credit card receipt for taxi services in a pair of Paddock's pants on the floor.
Paddock, 24, was arrested on accusations of robbery, manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, theft of services and assault.
Walker, 21, was arrested on accusations of robbery, manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, theft of services and harassment.
"I'm very disappointed that this has happened," OSU football coach Mike Riley said. "But I cannot comment further because of the ongoing investigation."
Walker and Paddock are scheduled to appear in Benton County Circuit Court at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Walker has yet to play for OSU, having transferred from Florida before the 2004 season. He's a 5-foot-9, 217-pounder from Statesboro, Ga., with experience playing for the Gators in the Southeastern Conference.
The junior running back did not play last season, sitting out one season due to NCAA transfer rules, though he has been working out with the Beavers in practice. Walker has two more seasons of eligibility left after redshirting at Florida and playing one season.
OSU coaches have said he's one of the players who they'll look to for significant playing time in the team's single-back offense. However, Walker is widely considered the frontrunner to be the starter.
If he's not available for this season, the Beavers will be thin at running back. Starter Dwight Wright will graduate this spring, and second-string back sophomore Ryan Cole is considering to transfer due to a perceived lack of future playing time.
Without Walker and Cole, that would leave redshirt freshman Yvenson Bernard and Sobomehin Olaniyi as the only ballcarriers with some playing time, and a couple of incoming freshmen and a junior college transfer.

Good point about Wolf - he saved our @$$es many times on 3rd down this season, and a horse like him will be missed - but from what I hear, weve got a couple of good TE recruits. Chaz will step up this year, and I'm hoping Murray wont be a fart in the wind. Forget Roosevelt. He may be fast, but his ego negates any talent he may have. Plus, he has a tendancy to be like Turnquist - stonehands/butterfingers. I don't see him doing much for this team.CelticCat wrote:I think the tandum of Domineck and a healthy Milton will give us a big running threat (we might gain more than a yard on first down... fathom that!), and thus will open up our passing game. My biggest worry on offense is actually one that isn't discussed much... the WRs. We all know Gatewood can play, but he can't be the only guy. Sullivan is gone, so Guinn needs to kick it in gear like we all know he can, and then someone has to be the possession receiver Sullivan was. Roosevelt? Perhaps. Murray? Hasn't played yet. Plus no one mentioned Wolf leaving. He made many big plays and had I think 800 yards receiving or somewhere along those lines. Losing Sullivan and Wolf was a blow, I hope someone can step up to fill those shoes.
On defense, our secondary should be better off after the "learning experience" that was our defense last season. Kory Ausin will be one hell of a DB when he leaves MSU - maybe even another Joey Thomas (hey, I can dream can't I?). The Ju-Co transfer DL David Siataga sounds very promising, and our linebacking core shouldn't be too bad with Mac and Nick back (even though we lose Cooper, Eggert, and Molock - oh man thats hard to stomach :-& ). Not to mention the fact that we've still got Clive Lowe (a bad@$$ MF in his own right). If we can just keep our secondary healthy, I think (no wait, hope) we'll be ok.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

I agree with some of that, but I would take issue with a couple of things. First off, Scott Turnquist was a great receiver for the Bobcats, he didn't have all the athletic ability of some of the guys, but he played smart and caught just about everything thrown his way. I tend to agree with your sentiments regarding Roosevelt, I just don't think he will ever be a big contributor. I hope Junior turns some magic and Brandon proves us wrong, he does have a ton of speed and athletic ability. I think Murray will be the real thing, the coaches are very high on him and I think he can give us a jolt of lightning that we need on offense.grizzh8r wrote:Good point about Wolf - he saved our @$$es many times on 3rd down this season, and a horse like him will be missed - but from what I hear, weve got a couple of good TE recruits. I too think Kory Austin will be a good player for the Cats, but never will be a great player. If you watched him last year, he got beat on just about every single play. He will never even come close to being as good as Joey Thomas - a player like Joey doesn't come around very often, even for I-A programs. Kory has some ability, but has a lot to learn about how to play the cornerback position. We may suffer something of a dropoff at LB, but we are pretty stacked with talent at that position, so I'm not too worried about it. Otherwise, I think the coaches have done a great job of filling in the holes we had and putting us in great shape to regain our stranglehold on the #1 defense in the Big Sky.

I have a question - why is everyone so down on Roosevelt? At the beginning of this year, I thought he looked as good (in this case bad) as everyone else. Everyone had a case of stonehand. But he only made it 3.3 games through the season, so he never had a chance to develop like the rest of the guys. I think he can be a good receiver still, give him more of a chance.

Iono, one of my good friends played against him in Oregon HS ball, and didn't think much of him...CelticCat wrote:I have a question - why is everyone so down on Roosevelt? To Bozone - I hoped you'd catch my sarcasm about Turnquist - he was the man.

Actually, Brandon was a stud high schooler becuase he could just outrun everyone. Hopefully this year he has his "breakout".grizzh8r wrote:Iono, one of my good friends played against him in Oregon HS ball, and didn't think much of him...CelticCat wrote:I have a question - why is everyone so down on Roosevelt? Didn't sound "sarcastic" to me either. It sounded more like a straight out "diss" on Scotty, who was not only a great Bobcat receiver on the field, he is also a great class-act Bobcat who we should be very proud of off the field.Helcat72 wrote:Boy! Yea...I saw Turnquist make some of the greatest catches ever for the Cats. How about the one against McNeese St? The ball was over thrown on a deep pattern he reached out tipped the ball up in the air, dove to the ground going full speed and caught the thing as he was falling.
The other one i remember was against Eastern Washington when he got hurt. He caught that while he was being blasted out of bounds in the air in the corner of the end zone.

He's going to realize that the only schools that are going to guarantee him he'll get his 25 carries a game are all not very good. The others are telling him he'll get 25 carries if he can beat out the incumbent and show he's capable. If he really thinks he's all that, he should be confident enough to just go to any I-AA and earn his wish to be the man. Sounds to me like he wants someone to tell him he's the goto guy instead of the other way around.

To close the chapter on Cole, there was an article in the Spokesman Review today stating he was enrolled at EWU and will participate in Spring Ball. MSU is sitting good at the RB position so this was probably the best fit even though Oregon State wanted him to stay it was the 'ole; Screw me once shame on you...screw me twice...
By the way, I think MSU or even PSU should be repping the BSC(in mens BB) in the NCAA's. That UM vs Weber game was one of the ugliest games I've ever forced myself to watch...
Had to edit this post as I remembered(trying to forget) quite a few games EWU played this season that were even harder to watch...
