I see your point, and I agree that Kramer wants too many good Montana players to just walk-on (i.e. Daly), but he isn't recruiting 900,000 potential football players. He is recruiting far less. How many seniors are there in Montana each year? Now cut that in half (half are female), and cut the remaining in a quarter (I would guess that 1 out of 4 males play high school football). With so few of players to recruit from he has to venture outside of Montana. Of course Kramer and his staff should recruit Montana hard and I think he does an adequate job of that, but MSU needs a larger population to recruit from. That is why Kramer goes out of state. California makes the most sense. California has 1/10th of the US's population so going there will certainly give MSU plenty of players to look at. I don’t think the problem is necessary where we recruit; I think the problem is not knowing the players well enough before we have them come to MSU (which is a hard thing to determine in the recruiting process).ArvCat wrote:It’s not about recruiting all Montana kids, it’s about putting a bit more emphasis on it. After all, it is MONTANA State University. Of course I’m not privy to Kramer’s recruiting strategy, but it just seems that year after year he signs just a hand full of in state kids. I find it hard to believe that there just aren’t enough talented kids in a 900,000 + people state or that when they compete with the Griz the Griz get them all, even if the Cats have more money on the table.
Prior to the Idaho & Fuller situation, I posted on another thread that this year is a golden opportunity for Kramer to walk the talk and sign up more Montanan’s. Given these recent negative events, it is even more imperative that he up the ante for the in state prospects. Yes I’m old school but I recall the Sonny’s use to offer around 10 in state kids every year and sign at least half if not 75% of them. Call it a quota system if you like, but I think Kramer needs try harder in state and offer around 10 scholarships every year to Montana kids. Oh well if he loses some to the Griz, University of Big Time, or Whatsamatter U, at least he made a more tangible effort and then he can use these unaccepted scholarship $’s on the supposed more talented Californians, JC transfers, dropdowns, etc.
BTW, being given the opportunity to be a “preferred walkon” seems to me like joining the Army as a brevet private. What a deal!

I for one believe the opposite may be true. Kramer may be recruiting too many MT kids. Case in point. Seldom does a MT kid get a D-1 offer and if he does you can bet MSU and UM were after him. They usually choose the 1-A offer which I do not fully understand. Second, I have never heard (I sure it has happened though) of a kid going to Carroll or Rocky that we wish we had recruited. We tend to take care of the borderline players with walk-on offers (as do the griz). So since all of the available talent is getting offers from MSU and UM their is no additional talent left. In addition, a number of MT recruits every year on scholarship do not ever play. They just don't develop into D-1AA players. So I believe Kramer makes every attempt to recruit as many kids as possible from MT and even offers a few he shouldn't just to keep everyone happy. If the griz did not get the majority of the MT talent this would be a mute point. There are only a few qualified kids and Kramer gets as many as he can. My first choice would be to win every game and have all MT players. Since that is not realistic I will take winning games over recruiting MT kids. I will not accept continued social problems for wins but I will accept out of state kids who behave.ArvCat wrote:It’s not about recruiting all Montana kids, it’s about putting a bit more emphasis on it. Casey Fitzsimmons played for Chester who won the 8 man title in 1999 I believe. He played at Carroll where he won Player of the year honors. He then signed a Free Agent contract with the Detroit Lions where he currently plays Tight End. I don't believe the Cats or Griz gave him a sniff. Too bad he was and excellent player and still is.gtapp wrote:I for one believe the opposite may be true. Kramer may be recruiting too many MT kids. Case in point. There will always be some that slip through the cracks. They just didn't get the looks, or were "too slow/small/etc." to play, or were not needed at the time, kinda like the Dan Raunig situation this year, us being deeeep at LB, and only offering for one(funniest thing, A MONTANAN!).bcats wrote:who won the 8 man title in 1999 I believe. Look at some of the Pros that are playing now, and where they went to school. A lot of them came from mid-majors and 1-AA schools, and are lighting it up. Why didn't they go to a 1-A power-house like Ohio State, Florida, or Texas? The same reason. It happens everywhere at every level. Deal with it.
Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.
