While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

Last I heard they’re disbanding the program. Can’t keep any players or coaches anyways. I doubt anybody ever comes to MSU again.coloradocat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 11:17 amWe've heard that before. Yep. this has been in the works for years. It was well-known in circles "in the know" that once Tommy graduated, there really was no need for a football team anymore. Wish we could have finished on a brighter note, but it was a fun ride while it lasted.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 11:23 amLast I heard they’re disbanding the program. Bummer. On the plus side, I've been hoping for MSU to add a women's soccer team for years and this does open up Bobcat Stadium to be used for a new sport. Maybe Vigen can coach that kind of football too?ilovethecats wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 11:36 amYep. this has been in the works for years. Seriously, I think people are going be eating a lot of crow for various reasons in the not too distant future.
But in the meantime, yes, I’ve seen work crews beginning to dismantle the indoor practice facility. Apparently Cruzado is going to pocket the money for that project on her way out.

The last time Tom had inside information, Brent Vigen was heading to Washington State. I hope he only "thinks" on this one.

Thank you all for both the thoughtful, rational responses, as well as the sarcastic ones, and all others in between. I honestly knew the answers to most of my questions, but a few of you brought clarity and confirmation to my thoughts. Mostly I just thought some of the other threads were going nowhere and decided to throw another one out there for a distraction, haha. I still am not so patiently waiting for some good news. On another thread it was mentioned that Udy is also leaving, so more possibly bad news. Growing weary of that. However, I am trying to remain hopeful and confident this isn't turning into a massive train wreck. I'm sure it's not, just will take time to get everything shook out. I agree with many that Bobcat football is strong, deep, and headed in the right direction. Thanks again guys!

I’m genuinely curious. Do you expect all of the coaches to stay forever? That’s very unrealistic. And I’ll warn you, Udy won’t be the last to leave before the new season. That’s good news! We have really good coaches and players, and we’ll have more next year too.nanacat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 12:06 pmThank you all for both the thoughtful, rational responses, as well as the sarcastic ones, and all others in between. I’ll remind you that everybody, myself included, was hugely disappointed when Choate left. And what happened? MSU got an even better coaching staff. The program has grown and will continue to do so. Coaches and players leaving for better jobs is a sign of progress.

At the core, we all are excited for next season and just expressing it in different ways. My wife would scissor kick me in the back of the head if I talked to her about this, and my dog is a black lab so she cheers for UC Davis. However, everything works out for the Cats. Never have been disappointed.

1. It did nothing but help. We played a poor first half and played an excellent 2nd half. We lost by 3 in the natty!! How does that hurt in any way?nanacat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2025 11:52 pmHearing mostly bad news since January 6th, starting with the loss, and culminating with 14 players and 2 coaches jumping ship,
combined with reading posts, analysis, articles, etc, has not been super great for my psyche as it relates to Bobcat football. The exception has been the players publicly posting they are staying, that's helped some. But over the past several days, many questions have developed in my mind. Maybe some of you who are wiser and less emotional than me can bring clarity.
What effect did a 15-1 season, with a the only loss being in the natty on national TV watched by over 2 million people, have on recruiting? Or will have?
Does knowing our award winning, and seemingly irreplaceable, QB is gone and there's no real replacement in place currently have an effect on portal players wanting to come to MSU?
Is the reason the Cats aren't signing any portal players by design, or is there a lack of faith in the program and players are opting to go elsewhere?
Are there coaches available to replace Walker and Johnson, or is Vigen just making in-house moves?
Is it possible the Cats are now in a holding pattern until spring and no changes/additions will be made in the short term?
Is the focus on developing players sustainable as opposed to bringing in transfer players? And can or should Bobcat football continue creating Montana-made players to be the core of the team?
Is it possible that due to the 26 (?) high school players who signed already, combined with the players currently on the team, that losing 14 doesn't really matter in the broad scheme of things?
Will there be any sort of press conference or article written where Vigen reveals what on earth is going on so we are not left in the dark and making up our own narratives?
2. I think the replacement is on roster already, JMO. Yes it will peak interest from transfer QBs, but we also run a very specific type of offense that doesn't throw the ball a ton. Whether it's a realistic dream or not most every collegiate player has dreams of playing in the pros when they enter college. It's very hard for a QB to go pro when you throw the ball so few times a game and with a scheme that doesn't seem to translate to the next level. So the QBs that will have interest will be very specific to what MSU does.
3. Both...the coaches have a lot of faith in what we have on the roster currently and they haven't had the time that other programs have to really get out and recruit guys. Things will move going forward as they are supposed to, both hs player wise and portal guys. I feel that Vigen and the coaches are looking for the RIGHT players as opposed to just players with talent. So it will take time to identify the players that fit mentally and physically, which I find to be a good thing.
4. He'll hire very good coaches, but I also feel that he is more concerned with fit than just getting a good coach. Just like the players he wants to get coaches that not only want to be here, but are also looking to stay here in order to have consistency.
5. Yes developing players is sustainable. This year had many in house developed players that helped the team be highly successful. If you don't develop players you won't win, everyone didn't leave and only a handful of our premier guys left, the rest were back ups that weren't really powering the team. The core of the team is already montana players. Recruiting for any school is highly regional. Cali teams have high numbers of Cali players...GA teams have high numbers of GA players...TX teams have high numbers of TX players...this is just the facts of recruiting. So yeah MSU needs to continue to take the approach of winning the state first.....cherry pick out of state players that fit mentally and physically second.....and finally yes hit the portal every year to replace older guys with older guys that also fit physically and mentally.
6. yes you are correct it isn't as big a hit as we all think it is. Again we only lost 5 guys that were premier players(polidore, moore, powdrell, humphrey, and jones). Everyone else was a back up or wasn't one of our go to guys. I have said it before and I'll say it again everyone that left we have a someone that talent wise is just as good if not better, they just lack experience...polidore = taki, powdrell = mcmillan, humphrey = davis/latin henley, jones = valcin/rocky, moore = several guys that have shown the ability to step in...we can throw in alexander = woods...we will be okay.
7. No I don't see a press conference in the near future addressing any of this. Why would you go out and put what your plan of attack is out for the world to see? Yes it makes us feel better but it also tips your hand to all your opponents. Nah he'll keep it close to vest and we'll just see the results as we get close to signing day and after spring portal opens/closes.
We are in a far better situation than many teams. I know of an fcs team that lost every single qb they had on roster....3 hit the portal and one quit football. They literally had not ONE qb on roster going into the break, THAT is a problem. We are just uncomfortable right now. Have to comfortable being uncomfortable. That's where greatness lives.......

I agree with everything except the offensive scheme. MSU will never be an offense that is pass heavy under Vigen, but I also don’t believe their goal is to be as QB run heavy as we were. That was just using Tommy to his strengths. Based on who they’ve been recruiting I think we can see they want to open up the passing game more than what they’ve done. If anything, and you just started following so I don’t blame you for not knowing, but I’d say their time with McKay, Tommy, and Chambers has shown they’ll adapt to what they have within reason.BobcatBuiltTexan wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 1:18 pm1. Fair enough.....I would also tend to agree with you but I think that's where having an oc and ol coach in place would help. I also think the integrity of vigen allows him to trek a kid we are going to open it up and kids will believe him.

No, I really don't. I do wonder sometimes how some programs do manage to keep coaches long term, but I think at this level it is highly unlikely that coaches stay more than 4-5 years. Doesn't mean I have to like it. And you're right, Choate leaving really sucked at the time, but Vigen has been really good. And I know that having a program that wins, develops players, and has a good coaching staff that other programs want is a really thing. It's just hard sometimes in the moment when those losses happen.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 12:23 pmI’m genuinely curious.
I’ll remind you that everybody, myself included, was hugely disappointed when Choate left. And what happened? MSU got an even better coaching staff. The program has grown and will continue to do so. Coaches and players leaving for better jobs is a sign of progress.

Which programs are keeping coaches for a long time? I can think of two, SDSU where Stigs is showing he was an outlier, and UM. I’d much rather have coaches who move upward than have Hauck and co. That’s my two cents.nanacat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 4:02 pmNo, I really don't. Valid point. And I think long term coaches exist at higher level schools, mostly because they can pay more. Though I don't watch much FBS ball, for the record.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 4:04 pmWhich programs are keeping coaches for a long time? To add to it it’s a good thing to have coaches move up. This day and age we just won’t see someone stick around for a long period of time. I don’t know if you want that to be honest at this level. For example usd coach just announced today he retired and they already hired his replacement or at least was announced today. at the FCs level we will always have turnover.
