Knowing the type of people I usually hang out with pretty sure the response I would have gotten back was, "Your intended what?"

A man to whom a woman is engaged to be married.

fi·an·cée n.

A woman to whom a man is engaged to be married.

[French, feminine of fiancé, fiancé. See fiancé.]

Looks like they are both pronounced the same, so in speach, wouldn't refering to a woman as your fiancee (said the same as fiance) be correct?

That's exactly the case, kmax. Many French words do that. Each word has a "gender" of masculine or feminine. English had this many, many years ago. But they are pronounced the same, but in spelling, add an extra "e" to describe a female.

This is coming from someone who has taken many a French class.

I guess I should chime in. I want to, and none of you are stopping me!

One is "pardon my French, oh ****" or whatever phrase is inserted. It's not French! Merde alors! (which is really swearing in French-holy s**t!)

I also can't stand the "like" every third word. It's really annoying.

And finally...I can't stand it when people call something "gay" just because they dislike it. Find a better term.

I Hate this one I do not know were it is from but i was on a crew spiked out in the middle of Yellowstone, and half the crew said it for 14 days. "Keep on Keepin on" an other quote i know it was on here last year but when people say "Griz Cat Game" No smack to griz but personaly i really dislike it...

don't know where ORIGINALLY from, but you may have a few Matt McConaughey fans in your group. I think I've heard the actor say that phrase in every interview i've ever seen with him in it. may be a Texas thing

I hate the term "monies". I don't know why, and I know it is correct usage, but it just irks me something fierce! I equate it to people saying deers or mooses. Has that same feel to it.

A couple that bug me...

"He's good people..." He may be good, but he's only one person.
"Think outside the box." This term gets used so much in the corporate world that I'm about ready to start saying, "Let's start thinking inside the box" just to be different.

Classic...one of my favorites from HS, too. (I was a senior, though...and as an aside, I always thought Kitty was older than I was -- I don't know why I thought that; I've never seen her post any personal info, but I always pictured her being a few years older than I. *shrug*)

Anyway, staying on topic -- this week, I'm really annoyed with "corporate" phrases. One of the partners I work for always refers to people as the "point man" (as in "Grizlaw is our point man on that transaction"). The same partner also refers to making progress on a project as "advancing the ball," and when a project is almost finished and he wants me to finish it, he'll ask if I can "get it across the goal line."

Of course, I'm typing this on my computer at work, and there's probably about a 65% chance that this post will result in an important file of mine mysteriously ending up getting shredded sometime next week, resulting in my getting canned and my legal career being ruined. That would suck (although, I guess, not badly enough to make me not post this.

Hehe. Point man refers to the first man into a skirmish or battle... ripping off a military term.

As to the last two, they remind me of the commercials with Steve Young, Jerome Bettis, and Daunte Culpepper, talking about sports references and how they shouldn't be used.

I actually never knew what "point man" meant, but the second two made me think of the same commercials.
