The guy that played next to Brody last year is now starting for Washington. Sea-Bass took on a lot of double teams and flushed QBs out of the pocket. Losing a player with that level of ability is going to impact how teams' scheme against the pass rush. It's going to be harder for Brody to get sacks this year. Not saying he won't do it. But he benefitted greatly from having Valdez next to him. Valdez's 1/11th was pretty significant.Helcat72 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 4:24 amIt seems that way to me also. I've watched Brodie and it seems that although he is powerful, he looks less quick than he used to be and slower. Maybe I just expect different results but he looks musclebound.

Wondering if Tommy takes a season ending injure if our backups can keep winning games. Small sample size with Reed in games, but I’d like to see Chance in as well. So far, and this is just a personal opinion, I’m not incredibly impressed with Reed.

I’m always curious why people are high on Chance. He has great high school film, but has anyone seen him do much in practice or scrimmages? Has he stood out at all? I’ve only seen Chance play four or five times, mostly in scrimmages. Chance seemed to be about on par athletically with Duchien, although Chance may be faster, Duchien is 30lbs heavier. Hopefully, we will see both get some time against Mercyhurst and can make a determination then, but they will probably be just handing the ball off by the time they get in the game.

I'd say it's likely a similar reason to why the woman all the way across the bar from you sometimes looks extremely attractive until you get up close enough to be able to see her flaws.AFCAT wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 11:23 amI’m always curious why people are high on Chance. I just don’t think Reed has looked good at all. I know some are pretty up on him, and he doesn’t get may reps with the 1’s, however, I’d like to see Chance and Duchien get some live game reps. I understand the team needs to be in a position to allow those reps, I just don’t think Reed is our future, in fact I don’t think life after Tommy is on the team this year. I’ll gladly eat crow if and when I’m probably wrong though.MSU01 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 11:36 amI'd say it's likely a similar reason to why the woman all the way across the bar from you sometimes looks extremely attractive until you get up close enough to be able to see her flaws.AFCAT wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 11:23 amI’m always curious why people are high on Chance. I agree that it's quite likely that next year's starting QB isn't on the roster right now, but I also think that if Jordan Reed weren't the second best QB on the team right now that the coaches wouldn't have him second on the depth chart. Most of us have seen him throw 33 total passes in his career so far with none of those happening in competitive games or with the starters on the field around him.SparkCat wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 11:45 amI just don’t think Reed has looked good at all. Agreed, I’m just being an armchair coach. Sometimes I like flash and ‘it’ factor which I don’t see in our depth, unfortunately. However, with the weapons we have on offense we really just need a great game manager, who can read the defense well and pass comfortably and if Reed can do that we will be fine this year if worst case scenario happens.MSU01 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 11:54 amI agree that it's quite likely that next year's starting QB isn't on the roster right now, but I also think that if Jordan Reed weren't the second best QB on the team right now that the coaches wouldn't have him second on the depth chart. Also, sorry if I am cranky today. An employee of mine didn’t get a few critical tasks completed over the weekend, so here I am!

Re: Concerns
Generally there is a "buzz" about back up players that are developing in the program. That "this kid has something about him" feeling. It was there before Lulay took charge. It was there with McGhee. It was there with Prukop. Maybe not so much with Mellot until McKay forced the coaches to make a move. But...generally there is some sort of excitement about what's on the horizon.
Is there any of that "buzz" with the current QB room beyond Mellot? Anything at all?

Tbh, I haven't been impressed with anything I've seen from the backups. If Tommy goes down we're in big big trouble.083190 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 12:47 pmGenerally there is a "buzz" about back up players that are developing in the program. Jordan Reed has a live arm and is the most natural thrower of the group. However, when the lights come on things don't slow down for him and the only way for him to get experience is to take actual starter reps (meaning starting a game, not backup duty).083190 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 12:47 pmGenerally there is a "buzz" about back up players that are developing in the program. Chance Wilson generates the most buzz because he's gotta a little bit of Dakota Prukop in him when he runs the ball. He too has a live arm but again its processing that has slowed him down and Jordan simply has more experience in the program. If Chance can take that next step mentally, he plays with a ton of confidence. Speaking of Dakota, it took him two years to figure it out but when the light came on his redshirt sophomore year we all had a lot of fun (kind of...that defense though).
Patrick is a great kid, good leader, multiple state champion, and competes his tail off. He just isn't as gifted as the other two when it comes to throwing the ball. HOWEVER, I saw more accurate throws from him during the spring game than Jordan and Chance combined.
What will next year look like? Likely the same three competing for the job with a transfer (likely a junior or senior grad transfer).
As for everyone saying we should have brought in a transfer to take that Chambers role, its really hard to find that type of player under the circumstances. Chambers knew Vigen and wanted a shot to play but also didn't want to take over Tommy's starting role. It was unique. Not saying they didn't try to find that type of player but what do you promise? A competition but understand Tommy is QB1? Anyway, let's hope Tommy is healthy for the inevitable stretch run so he can finish his career playing...not nursing an injury.
