All of the above is exactly the same for me! I grew up bleeding blue and gold. Not because of football, but because of hoops. I was at the '96 tourney as a middle school kid, I went to EVERY game during my 4 years at MSU, and just last year when in Bozeman for work I choose to sit at Bridger Brewing rather than make it to the first half of the men's home game.

Excuses only last so long. Until we field a competitive team and start to make a run at the tourney I am done. I was raised on Bobcat basketball, know more about the Ferches, Quad, Nico, Adam, Erickson, etc than anyone should and I have hit a point of apathy. It is that bad!!

TrueCat wrote:If the "UM does it" argument doesn't hold water for you, how about this? MSU used to do it. I doubt there are many Bobcat fans who don't want players like their old basketball legends at MSU.
You are right, MSU used to do it. However, the college athletic landscape has changed quite a bit since then i.e.- APR. In addition, the quality of Montana High School basketball has gone down over the years. Most of the high school athletes that would make great basketball players are now playing football instead.[/quote]
Everyone in the Big Sky has to deal with APR. Weber and UM both field consistently strong teams. Winning games in the NCAA tournament will probably never be a regular occurrence, but other teams in the Big Sky have has some success in other postseason tournaments. That used to be the Cats. It should be again.

And the lack of in-state talent wouldn't be as much of a problem if we didn't lose most of it to the Griz. The real problem is MSU's recruiting.

MSU also doesn't do the best job of developing players when they do manage to find some talent. Look at Jeff Budnich. He was from Montana. He was 6'10" and had a ton of quicks and offensive skill. He wasn't really weak, either. But his technique wasn't great and he never got any better while he was at MSU. Better coaching could have made him into a stronger, slightly shorter Derek Selvig. Instead, he stagnated.

You're not giving reasons, you're making excuses for a program that hasn't been run well enough.

First, Jeff was from Washington.

Second, who have the CATS missed out on in recruting in-state? Selvig? No was he was coming here. They got Howard, Brumwell and Robison. Bradshaw was intent on leaving the state, when he realized it was not for him, his transfer to UM was in stone.

So the solution is to drive away every fan and or supporter of the team who isn't satisfied with mediocrity and general program failure wrather than try and fix the program. :?

My hope for the women's team:

The Big Sky conference on the women's side is brutal in regards to parity. You could have a great team and still only be .500. I am just hoping that the ladies play up to their ability. If they do, they can probably make a run into the semi-finals at tournament time. They are fun to watch. Coach Binford isn't scared to change things up and try new approaches to help her team. The Lady Cats are usually a very close knit team and it show up on the court.

My hope for the men's team:

My biggest complaint in regards to the men's team and their biggest downfall from what I can see, is that under Coach Huse, they have never established their identity in terms of style of play, players recruited, etc...

Every other program (exclude tennis and golf) at MSU has established some sort of identity about their team

Football - Whatever else happens, the Cats typically play sound, fundamental football with very few mental lapses.
Volleyball - Weindell is all about tempo and blocking and development of players. He actually recruited a top 100 recruiting class in his first year and they are showing it on the court.
Ladies Basketball - fast paced, players who can score from inside out, etc. Binford recruits to her style of player

Men's Basketball?????
No idea. It is the only team that I have ever watched that I have not a clue on what they are trying to do. Most of the time it looks like a bad AAU team that has never played together. Recruiting?

I like Coach Huse and am rooting for him....but until his teams start to show some semblance of looking like they know what they are doing on the court and why, it is going to be tough to watch.

I have always been a football fan, basketball, I see that the school is happy to tread water. I have never attended many bball games just because of the time of the games, but it has gone down since it looks like the team does not care.

Hmmm...interesting. I think you should confront Coach Huse, or tell ANY player on the roster that you think that they don't care...go ahead, see what their reaction is.

I wish I could! Cause I know you won't do it. However, Coach Huse's email and phone are readily available on msubobcats.com...send him an email regarding your thoughts about him not caring.

It definitely looks like Huse cares to me. He's going to do the best job he can, if for no other reason than to keep that job. Plus, can you see anyone getting that angry about something he doesn't care about? I mean, you're angry at the people who want to see changes in the program, and the rest of us are angry that there haven't been any changes, and we all care about the Bobcats, and none of us are half as heated as Huse gets at the games.

I'm just not convinced that his best is good enough. Huse's current contract will take him through his ninth season at MSU. That's almost a decade invested in him. It's senseless to give a coach that long unless you are certain he's good enough to get the job done. Uncertainty isn't good enough for that sort of time commitment.

Huse did the football equivalent of replacing his offensive and defensive coordinators in shaking up his staff. That is a sign of dissatisfaction with the status quo. I wonder the makeup of his staff was a topic of conversation between Huse and Fields before the contract extension was offered. His new assistants are intriguing and I do believe they're bearing fruit on the recruiting trail.

As for the negativity: There's more negativity expressed during a football game day thread for a game the Bobcats are winning than we see on this board! The concern should not be negativity-it's apathy. If trends continue they can just move the games to Shroyer and save lighting and heating the Worthington.

And what? Accept mediocrity? Come on man, enough with this "everything is just fine, MSU doesn't do anything wrong, EVER" shtick. You're the ONLY poster on here who constantly does this. You know what? If there is an apparent problem with any one of our programs, people have a right to voice their displeasure with it.
You are damn right that I am one of the only few who support this program unconditionally and dont mock our coach and players. You know how hard it is to field a competitive, mid - major basketball team?? And don't give me this "U of M does it". That argument is old because every one who posts on here talks about how they would not want there type of players on the MSU squad. Most of those kids that ended up a U of M were looking at MSU, but they could not meet the academic requirements. That is a fact!

You make it sound like something is owed to you personally...it isn't. If following this program is so difficult for you and makes you feel like a jilted bride on her wedding day, then just stop following them!

True, I respect your passion, and I'm certainly no Griz apologist. But this is simply not accurate. MSU and UM have exactly the same entrance requirements. And I don't recall hearing about a number of UM players having academic issues. Good players are choosing Montana because one, they're winning and going to the NCAA tournamrnt regularly (and we're doing neither) and two, because Tinkle could recruit Jerry Tarkanian to work for the NCAA compliance division. Now THAT is a fact.
