Joey red shirted at Washington. He was a red shirt sophomore when he came to MSU.

Jeff Bulton only started against McNeese. I think playing Jeff was a huge waste of Jeff's red shirt year. They also used Zach Wolf's red shirt year for one series in the McNeese State game.

What if its put this way...

If a freshman is good enough to contribute, that means the kid is special. With each and every kid who comes through any athletic program, first instinct is to redshirt. It makes it easier on the kid to adjust to college life and the rigors of scholastics, and it also helps groom the kid for future play in the program.

If a kid has the talent to beat out 2-3-4-5 year guys inside the program, to me, it says more about the freshman than it does about the kids they are beating out.

I guess I dont look at it as being "forced" to play a frosh, but rather - WOW, this kid is good enough to play now, what will this kid be like when they mature and learn the system.

I cant recall how many games Bolton started, or if he started at all, but I do remember him making an impact his freshman year. He was a reliable backup all season - and that is great contribution from a frosh if you ask me. I wouldnt consider his first year a waste in regards to redshirting him.

As for Zach, as of 3 months ago, I'd totally agree with you. Since his career ending injury though, it apparently didnt matter. Going through 3 centers in one week kinda blew that one out of the water though.

I am very thankful that Sweet Lou didnt get his RS burned last year. He was one RS alert all season long, especially after Peder Jensen broke his leg.

If I had my choice, every frosh coming in the door would be handed a redshirt.

I was simply going off the knowledge that I had of Jeff as a senior that played on the offensive line during the 2002 season....

You would definitely know better if Jeff would have been better suited as a redshirt. For the average schmuck in the stands, I thought he did quite well. Imagine if we had that beast for one more year though...

Speaking of wastes of redshirts, Mac Mollohan SHOULD only be a red-shirt Junior this season. I believe the original plan was to redshirt him but he was suited up and on the sidelines when one of the special teams kids couldn't go out to cover a kick; one of the coaches grabbed Mac & threw him out on the field. BYE BYE redshirt...

Of course, that story DOES have a happy ending. If Mac doesn't play that year, despite Travis & Junior's big play, we most likely lose our 17th straight to the fizz because it was Big Mac who made a touchdown-saving tackle on a Segars kick return later in the game...

I'm kind of surprised at the suggestion of grey-shirting for Hoffenbacker. I believe that when you sign a LOI as he did, the 5-year eligibility time clock starts, and grey-shirting doesn't apply anymore. Grey-shirting is delaying the clock start until the January following your HS graduation. The process is...... no LOI, no schollie, and no team involvement until second semester starts. You can't even enroll as a FULL-time student that first fall. You have to be part-time or OUT of school. The danger to the program is that the player, if he is out of school, is essentially a free agent and he could go ANYWHERE that second semester.

Correctomundo.....Murphy and Justin Hartman greyshirted at the same time. Actually it was a personal discussion I had with Hartman that clued me in on the enrollment status requirement for greyshirting. Prior to that, I knew only about the "no football affiliation" issue to it.

Someone told me that Hartman is helping out at the UM with summer camp. Could they be in the throes of a reconciliation...are they that desperate?

I don't think so. I have some pretty good sources that even though the griz are hurting at qb, Mr. Hartman is going to stay at Western. He won't start there though because the starting qb from last year is still there. Travis Blome is not going to just roll over and give up his starting job to Hartman.

he's a crybaby to begin with...i doubt the u would want him back after the stunt he pulled
