Found this in the Gazette
http://www.billingsgazette.com/index.ph ... cgowan.incMcGowan's father Felix played basketball at Rocky Mountain College before becoming Poplar's long-time basketball coach. His brother, Felix Jr., played hoops for Montana State, North Idaho Junior College and Gonzaga. The youngest McGowan could be close to carving out his own niche, on the track.

Well let's recruit all out of state players then........we really would have the interest of our Montana fans.mslacat wrote:Notice a trend? The montana kids are not pulling their weight like they used to! I also do not think that the conference is nearly as good as it was in the early 90's

It is bad enough now for Montana State fans.

I saw Joel play a little in high school and I'll tell you what he could flat out play. I know for a fact he could have been a 2 sport star at MSU. I know that he was recruited by both the Griz and the Cats for both football and basketball. Probably missed a great player but better kid this time...

I don't think that Joel would have been able to be a RB at the college level. He wasn't big at all, he was maybe 5'10" and 170 or so. He was a good HS running back, but that is all Scobey did for HS football, so he got more action than a normal RB.
The big thing with him was his character. His behavior at MSU-Billings was questionable most of the time and his actions in high school were deplorable at times. I don't think MSU missed a great person, but they did miss a good basketball player.

Don't think you are talking the about the same guy profisme. Sorry but Carse is a little over the top when it comes to rules, no bars ever. Come on that is flat out stupid. No junk food ever, he sounds like a control freak to me. Tell you what I would not have lasted 2 weeks for that guy.
I would like to think that evereyone who has gone through college probably has done a lot worse than what Joel may or may not have done. The thing is he is under a microscope being a college basketball player and (you) as far as I know were not. So when someone who is not locally recognized gets in trouble nobody notices, but when an athlete does, its very noticeable.
kinda a double standard, but that is the price for being a college athlete

AZ,
You are correct in assuming that I am not a college basketball player, nor a college football player. What you are incorrect in assuming is that I don't know Joel Nieskins. I know him personally and in my opinion, the man is very much lacking in character.
As for my own basketball abilities, I have played with good ball players and held my own. I wasn't good enough to play college ball, but what I lacked in talent I made up for in hustle. Joel had more talent than most players from Northeastern Montana (save Josh Jensen from Medicine Lake). Joel, when he was on was fantastic, don't get me wrong, I do believe he was a heck of a great basketball player, just not a heck of a great person.

I didn't think that I ever said that you didn't know him. I know of him from the days he played at billings and when he came and played against the bobcats in bozeman. I also know his mom and dad fairly well, so I think we can agree to disagree! ha ha
Anyway i think he is a good kid and I don't like to see a student athlete that is not really associated with MSU get bashed on our board.
One question for you....Did he happen to steal your girlfriend or something?

I will agree with you AZ, he really isn't associated with MSU, although I wasn't bashing him, I was just speaking from personal experience, as were you. I happen to know his whole family very well.... but I digress.
AZ, I think I would like to talk to you sometime. I am happy to share banter about certain people, but I am not going to discuss Joel Nieskins or Spencer Frederick (both in the same class at Scobey) on this board again.
He didn't steal my girlfriend, but he was dating a close friend of mine..... not that I approved of it.

Joel Nieskens was recruited by both the cats and griz for football and a numerous schools for basketball. Unfortunately Craig Carse got ahold of him at MSU-Billings. I know his family as well and what a nice bunch of people. You cant judge a kid going through their college years but as i have seen him grow up what a nice young man he has turned out to be. I know his younger brother who really looks up to him. I dont know any of his other siblings. As we are talking about Peerless-Scobey Adam Morrison's mom is from Peerless ( Wanda Hames) and his Dad (John Morrison) is from Scobey. John coached a numerous of college teams.
