Replacements:

Daly or Howe are the leaders for me. I’d kind of prefer Daly as HC if Howe would stay as DC, but that seems unlikely. I think they’d both be great hires.

Outside hire. This will be a national job, with a lot of high caliber candidates. Both prior coaches have gone to FBS jobs, and MSU is a big fish in a little pond in regards to the FCS.

Jody Owens. I think he has the potential to be a really good HC, but he needs some seasoning yet.

I was reading the NDSU forum (Bisonville) earlier and they seem rather unbothered by the prospect of Polasek possibly going to Oregon State. I guess if any fanbase should be well aware that losing a successful head coach doesn't necessarily mean that your program will take a huge step backward, it would be them.
Because they know, like we should know, it’s the program more than the coach.

Having 5 or 6 successful coaching changes in a row and winning 10 Championships in 15 years will do that to a fan base.

To be fair they’ve got plenty of evidence that their organization can handle it. Not many teams keep on trucking like NDSU

Some players will leave even if Vigen stays. In today’s college football it’s hard to tell if a kid leaves due to a head coach or leaves to get paid elsewhere.

I looked online and from the perspective of several journalists in Oregon, Polasek is the favorite. Guess we'll see.
John Canzano of Oregonlive.com will have the scoop, but he has a paywall and I'm not in the mood to pay coin to see when my coach is leaving.

Oregon State is really hard to recruit to, even with the large area of availability. Corvallis will be Vigen's coaching deathbed, in my opinion. Denny and Mike Riley are the only two coaches with overall winning records since I was born, and I will be 59 next month. Denny did it with his connections with JC players like Nick Barnett, Ocho Cinco, TJ Houshmenzadeh, DeLawrence Grant, Richard Siegler, etc.

Another point - not sure if Vigen is the rebuilder that Choate is, very similar to the fact that Choate is, in my mind, not the CEO coach that Vigen is to get a program over that final hurdle that we are staring at right now. I think those are two different traits for coaches, businessmen, etc.

Great point. Vigen would face an extremely different set of challenges than what he had to face when coming to MSU into a building that had recently been to the FCS semifinals and had multiple future NFL draft picks on the roster plus a future Payton Award winner as a freshman QB.

This is very true, but what are the chances he gets to take over a successful FBS program?

Very low, but I was thinking less of his ability to get an FBS job (which I think he will if he wants one) and more of the likelihood of him being able to rebuild a bad program into a winner if he gets one.

Totally agree with this. Vigen was such a good guy to perfect what was already well in motion. He's not as engaging as Choate, and I think it takes guys a while to warm up to him. A coach on a rebuild needs to go sit in living rooms and have a hell of a great sales pitch. His sales pitch at MSU is "we've got a good thing going on here and I can pretty much guarantee you'll be successful". For a somewhat stiff, not very dynamic guy, he's going to have some heavy lifting to convince young guys from the west coast to go to Corvallis. No disrespect, I love the guy and his quiet, North Dakota personality, but I don't think this is the job for him. I think if he has a national championship or two under his belt, his credibility goes way up and he doesn't need the schtick. Right now he might have to convince some people why he didn't win an FCS national championship and why he's gonna get big things done on a pretty major rebuild.

His first FBS job isn't going to be a great one but it's up to him if he wants it to be a bad one or not. Going to a team that just fired its head coach on a short leash and will want a quick turnaround doesn't seem like the best spot for Vigen (at least there's no evidence that it would be). I think he'd be better off trying to get a job out of the second round of openings rather than the first. Replace a guy that walked out the door, not one that was thrown out.

Corvallis airport doesn't have commercial service so Portland seems easier if they're interviewing multiple candidates without access to private jets to fly people around. Plus Vigen has a job to do back in Bozeman and likely wanted this to be as quick a trip as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if he's flying back into Bozeman tonight to get to work on playoff prep in the morning.
Why not Eugene? Its an hour closer to OSU campus than PDX.
Only nonstop flight is to Portland.
Well, yeah. But OSU isnt in Portland.
Nor is it in Eugene. It is very common for coaching interviews to happen off-campus in more convenient locations for quick travel in and out. Again, Vigen has a job to do back in Bozeman. The campus tour can wait.
So why not just use Zoom like the rest of the world?

(I'm not saying that anything in college football makes sense, but seriously. This is a level of flabbergastingly stupid that makes everything else at the NCAA look really reasonable by comparison....we drive the interview committee 2 hours rather than making the job applicant come to the place of business? Wow!)
I was assuming that the initial contact or Zoom interview portion of the process has already occurred. These are finalist interviews, the process has probably been ongoing ever since they fired the previous coach.
probably even before he was fired...probably put out feelers to see who was interested.....Coach Vigen has earned it but I hope he doesn't get it....for those who think we will be fine it will take a few years to be fine.
Why?
because finding someone to fill Vigen's shoes is not a given..He will take some quality players and coaches with him, other players might hit the portal others might de-commit ..finding someone with his personality to step in with the boosters will not be easy..fool yourself if you want but if he goes he we lose a lot in the process.
I don't necessarily disagree, but most of the fanbase was worried we would take a step back going from Choate to Vigen. It turned out alright and quicker than most thought. Vigen could be an outlier, but you never know....

The problem in today’s NCAA is that a big chunk of the team can follow the departing HC. That couldn’t happen with Choate.

Jonathan Smith also had success at OSU. And ironically, he left for the other MSU - Michigan State - and is likely on his way out there. To be fair, he bailed when he saw that U$C was breaking up the Pac-12.

I had similar thoughts. My Monday morning quarterbacking observations on rebuilds are they can be a resume boost or a death knell depending on how it goes and stress is there all the time to improve.
