I really hope Kautzman works his butt off and turns the corner kicking for us. We certainly need a K to provide competition but I hope Casey has a strong year next year.
I'm rooting for Casey. He was put in a tough position this season, as I think the coaches were hoping he would have a year or two to develop. I still think he could develop into a good one.
I am too. I think he knows how to kick, just needs a little coaching from a specialist, which will never be on the MSU staff. I might be totally wrong, but kicking seems like something that lots of people know how to do, but it takes something special between the ears to be able to pull it off in crunch time. Plenty of guys can make free throws in practice, but with the game on the line can they hit them? I can hit great drives on the range, but when I have to have one that's when the shanks come out. Don't have to have a guy who can bomb them from 55, but if you have a guy who can hit them under 45 consistently and at important times in the game you're in pretty good shape.
Vigen alluded to this during press conferences but he was very frustrated this year due to the fact Brendan Hall was nearly perfect during practice but then fell apart during games as a place kicker. The feeling was Kautzman didn't have the leg but possibly a better confidence with his game and that proved incorrect as well. It's not as easy as some fans make it out to be. The whole fanbase can be riding on your shoulders prior to a game winning kick. That's a lot for one kid to take sometimes.
Hall *never* looked good out there as a PK to my eyes. Wasn't just the yips.

And that's not an aspersion against the young man. He was a terrific weapon on punts and kickoffs and I'm delighted he'll be back next year.
Don't think it was the yips per se, but definitely between the ears when he needed to make kicks in an actual game.

I think I mentioned it before but I have a suite and often times forgo tailgating to set up food and whatnot. So I watch the guys warm up before every game. Hall flat out doesn't miss from anywhere. I'm talking both hashes. 40 yards, 50 yards, 60+. And I mean doesn't miss. From anywhere. So I think I was more frustrated than most watching him in game situations. The skill is there. Some guys can do it in games and some can't. :-k

Maybe this off season can be spent working with a psychologist\specialist, whatever you want to call it to get his mind in the right place to execute on game day and in huge pressure situations. I recently started watching that Netflix special on NFL QBs and a lot of players turn to assistance like this to get their games at the highest level. Sorry for the side-bar... back to the recruits!!

I'm very concerned Choate & Ioane are going to poach Hudson Wiens from us which would just be icing on the cake at this point.
Thankfully you didn't poach him....Kane. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I have thought this all season.

I'm not going to pretend to know the first thing about kicking. I have no clue. But the kid can flat out boot the ball, yet everytime he lined up in a game you'd bet money he was missing. Like I said I'm not bashing him. I think he's got the talent and I would love to see him put it together in games.

I noticed that UM picked up this transfer from Cal. Hoping the Cats coaching staff are finding the same caliber of transfers. Also wondering how much this season's results will hamper those efforts and make it easier for the Gris.

I'm dumb, but are there really any deadlines to the transfer thing? People are talking about how the deadline is January 2nd... but for any players on any team that is still playing then, they have five days after that last game to enter the portal. So I assume any team in the country can sign any of those players after that? Second part of the question, what if a player just flat out quits or gets kicked off the team some time in the Spring. Other teams can pick them up right? I swear I've seen it happen, but maybe requires a petition or something. Also, can't JC players come to us at any time? Again, I don't know how all this works.

What makes you think he’s any good? Just because he came from Cal? Cal isn’t exactly good…

Besides, I still think we’ll get Rollins.

Oh hey look another "new poster" on signing day who is bringing the Griz in to the conversation (that's two so far today for those counting at home).

This kid was actually beat out by former Bobcat TJ Session on the Cal line. I also don't think we need any huge reinforcements on our offensive line because our development program is pretty sound. Thanks for thinking of us though.

The first deadline for players to enter the Portal is January 2nd but yes, teams can still sign transfer players after the window to enter the Portal has closed. There will be a second Portal entry period later in the year after Spring Practices have ended. JC players can be signed at any time as they aren't under NCAA rules.

When does the transfer portal open for football?
In the Football Bowl Subdivision, a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal begins Dec. 4. There is also a spring window from April 15-30. It's worth noting that these windows restrict when an athlete's name can be entered into the portal, not when they actually transfer to a different school.

And Rush Reimer just committed to Cal through the portal. So a second 'Cat lineman that might affect his playing time (didn't bother to check which line position).

Thanks to both of you! That makes more sense, as I wasn't exactly clear on all that. So the way to think of it from MY team's perspective, is that the only time we care about "deadlines" is in terms of any of our players leaving. We can sign any players from any school, at any time as long as they are in the portal, or not under the NCAA umbrella.

Correct, no player can enter the Portal between Jan. 2 and April 15 so that is a period of stability at least in terms of outgoing transfers.

Anybody can get the yip's doing just about anything. Seemed to be contagious in the kicking room this year.

A number of years ago I got the yip's shooting my bow, I spent about 2 weeks shooting at a big target blindfolded, just concentrating on form and feel. When I took the blindfold off I was back on target.
