It's called "marketing." It's when a company invests money for advertising to promote an image that they feel will drive more revenue for their business within their target market (which in this case is Bozeman, and specifically primarily MSU fans).
It will probably pay off for them hundred-fold, so it was likely an excellent decision for their business.
I take it the rest of your post was just an effort to provide anecdotal evidence supporting those MSU fans who speak of their dislike of Griz fans as their reason for cheering against their rival school (if the fact that virtually all rival fans cheer against their rivals wasn't enough).
Oh marketing. I get it now. Hence the term "advertisement." I get why they did it and, as I said, I don't have a problem with it. Maybe Missoula bars would employ a similar "marketing strategy" if the Cats would ever afford them the chance but that hasn't happened for a quarter century.
As for your point that "all rival fans cheer against their rivals," the last time the Cats were in the playoffs, some friends and I walked over to a Missoula bar after the Griz had just beaten Southern Illinois in their quarterfinal and they had the Cats - App State game on TV and most (not all - but most) were pulling for the Cats to win. Most people were talking about how cool it would be to see the national championship be a Griz-Cat game. I agree that probably wouldn't have been the case back in 1984 which proves my point. It's easier for fans of the team that's consistently on top to pull for their rival. It's not a slam. It's just the way it is.

If the Griz were eliminated from the playoffs and the Cats were still playing, I suspect these anecdotal warm and fuzzy stories like the one you mentioned that come up now and again would not be easy to find.
If Griz fans were all gracious in [their favorite team winning a game], I suspect you'd see more MSU people supporting them. But I can understand why many MSU people wouldn't feel much incentive to cheer for a team to win when they know that a victory by that team will result in a bunch of people they have to deal with on a daily basis acting like dickheads (even though they accomplished nothing at all themselves). Dickheads can be annoying, and therefore anything that directly leads to the increase in numbers of dickheads in one's own general proximity can certainly be seen as a negative.
So that's why I'm always split on this. I am against the proliferation of dickheads while liking the idea of a victory for the regional team itself. If only the team and the fans were mutually exclusive....

Exactly. Only I'm not divided, the not wanting to deal with the dickheads wins out!
I just told my cousin to told me she's ALWAYS cheer for a Montana team in the Nat'l Championship that it's probably easier to say that from the other side of the streak.
And I do always cheer for Carrol. No matter who they're playing.

It'd be cool if he stuck by it, instead he just lost business, apologized, called himself classless and stupid, and wished the Griz well.

Exactly how did he lose business? The "fans" who called and threatened to boycott the bar had probably never been in Spec's before and never had any intention of going in. It seems like it was several griz "fans" who were being pu$$ies.
Retiring my moniker. It's time to ride off into the sunset. It's been a fun ride. Go Cats.

The term is actually "Once a Bobcat always a Bobcat, once a griz always an idiot"............
Please try to get it right from now on out.

Its amazing how a simple ad blew up into the S**t storm that happened. The people calling around the state that were threatening to do things to the business and then the people that were threatening to harm employees, Joe, and also his family was unreal. I personally don't ever root for the griz due to the fans when I was growing up. Even with how big the rivalry is between fans I just wish fans would have fun with the rivalry and not take it to such an extreme!

Keep in mind you're not dealing with rational people, you're dealing with grizidiots. They're so pumped full of dark pink that the mere thought of someone not rooting for their team is beyond their reasoning. I would certainly hope that any idle threats received were just that, it's so easy to hide behind anonymity.
Specs has always been one of my favorite haunts and the ad just raised the place up a few notches.

I think this right here shows why I never cheer for the griz. Thier fans are such dickheads that they threatend the employees of Specs.
get over yourselvs griz fans.

If that's the case (which I have no doubt it is), I hope you got their phone numbers and reported it to the authorities.

We had a vendor who happened to be a griz fan stop by our office on Friday, and he proceeded to go to one of my co-workers computers and pulled up e-griz and the thread on the ad. He was PO'd that someone would ever root against his mighty friz and he even mentioned that he had to call Specs. I thought the ad was funny and harmless. This kind of behavior by griz fans makes it a lot easier to dislike the pricks....

I wonder if there is a way to get an inbound call log...?

There should be. I know someone who gathered documentation relating to abandoned property. This person was able to get Bresnan to print off attempted calls to the other party. It would seem reasonable there could be incoming call logs whether or not the call was answered.
I personally would get the authorities involved (not that anyone asked me). As a business owner, I would think all threats against employees would need to be taken seriously.

It's funny to me that whenever the griz lose, they never say the other team was better, or they didn't play well, or anything about the actual game. They always come on here and say how bad we are, and how much we suck, and how much we wish we were them. They try so hard to deflect losing the game so people will forget that they failed when all they talked about was how they are SO much better than everyone, then get knocked off their high horse. When you do you lose, sack up, be a man, and say "we lost, but we had a good year." Not this BS.
I think you don't get it. Sleeping in until 6 won't get many people very far in life, especially if they want to play on Sunday.
