How unique is MSU’s offense?
A lot of people are trying to call it a two-QB system. We actually have used three. It’s more of a two-offense system to me. Seems like Andersen and Jonsen took about 20-25 snaps, while Bauman took about 45-50.
I can’t think of any other team that has done this.

And there is no reason it can't work. We are so lucky to even have that option as we get a redshirt freshman experience. What better way to break a guy in.iaafan wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2019 12:31 pmA lot of people are trying to call it a two-QB system. We actually have used three. It’s more of a two-offense system to me. And as many of us have said forever, we don't need CB to be an all-American out there. We need him to run the offense, move the chains, and take care of the ball. So far he has done that and my guess is he'll only improve.
But there is NO way that you don't put the ball in Andersen and Jonsens hands. Call it a 3-qb system if you want, but those guys need the ball in their hands. This offense will find ways to give defenses fits this season I think.

Re: How unique is MSU’s offense?
I'd say pretty damn unique, this is from the Sunday Game Notes on msubobcats.com
• One dozen different players have carried the ball for the Bobcats through two games, five have thrown passes, and nine have caught passes.

Probably then a 3 QB, 2 scheme system... So far!!!ilovethecats wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2019 2:56 pmAnd there is no reason it can't work. Somewhat related to this.....Matt's buddy Kellen Moore seems to be taking the NFL by storm this year.

Well one big positive I see in this, is that we aren’t totally relying on Troy Anderson to be the Bell Cow. The local media hypes all of these weapons, so let’s use them!

He's the Dallas OC. Matt spent a bunch of time down there this summer.

No longer plays there, but is their Offensive Coordinator this year, promotion from QB coach last year.

He has resuscitated the offense for the Cowboys.
While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

Re: How unique is MSU’s offense?
I don't recall anyone doing anything remotely similar to what MSU is doing. If they did, it became neither popular nor eye-catching. Who knows it could become the next big fad. It's beginning to seem more ingenious as the games go by. Opposing defenses only have so much time to prepare and they typically only prepare for one style of offense. MSU doesn't have a dual-threat QB, it has a dual-threat system. If this thing takes off, Matt Miller will be dubbed a football genius.
I'd like to see Jonsen throw it or hand it off to someone more often. He seems to run every time, but then again the one time (I only recall once) he did get it to someone else (Jones) it went for a TD, so him keeping it may all be by design.
Bauman just needs to be respected by the other teams for now. The 28-point, 240-yard 3rd quarter coincided with the best stretch of his young career. He just missed on a couple long passes.
Andersen is a problem for teams. You absolutely have to account for him. The trouble with that is if you give him too much attention the other backs will make you pay that way. He hasn't thrown a pass....yet.

MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Re: How unique is MSU’s offense?
I would be willing to bet that is exactly the point. Jonsen to keep it the first 2,3,4 times they run that play so the defense gets used to him keeping it, then change it up. At that point the outside LB’s may be sucking in to help clog the middle where the ball has been going and Jones or whoever else is in motion can slip around the corner and is gone.
It’s a win win, Jonsen always seems to get positive yardage, and if he does find that gap, he’s a home run threat too, he got a couple of rushing TD’s and first downs on the exact same play last year when he kept it up the middle.

I think we’ve yet to see Jonsens true speed. There’s been hints of it but I think he’s trying to ‘power’ through the line. If he ‘blasts’ through the hole, he’ll be untouchable too.Catsrgrood wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2019 4:52 pmI would be willing to bet that is exactly the point. Yes, that has to be tough to prepare for so many weapons that can be used so many ways. We look to be very very fortunate...

Football coaches at most levels are pretty resistant to change. I have to give Coach Choate a lot of credit for not being afraid to try some unusual things to involve his playmakers, of which he has quite a few. He understands that star players win games. It must at some point be more fun for the players than the same old grind.

On a side note, I was watching Maryland put up 63 on Saturday morning, and they occasionally brought in another QB to run option out of the same diamond formation. MD's guy was only 5'10" and was clearly a pure option QB, but it was interesting to see the same diamond formation. Aside from the Cats and now MD, I've never seen it before.

100% agree, I don’t think we’ve really seen Jonsen in the open field yet, the TD runs he has had seem to have been from inside the 10 yd line.94VegasCat wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2019 5:11 pmI think we’ve yet to see Jonsens true speed. I’m just speaking more to the fact that I think it’s by design that Jonsen keeps it a handful of times first before giving it up on the pitch, helps build tendency’s in the defense.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the next time we see that play if he pitches it 2 or 3 times first and then keeps it the next time. Keeps the defense guessing.

Re: How unique is MSU’s offense?
It has been well documented that a two qb system is not effective. With that in mind, I would guess that taking it to an extreme and having five just complicates it enough that a degree of success is had. I’m most impressed with how the line adjusts to the wide variety.

Ha Ha! I like that plan. Then Hell, start Blake Thelan the next week, might as well get him some touches as long as he doesn't play in more than four games. I see he won scout team player this week.Montanabob wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2019 5:53 pmConfuse everybody next week start Beltran at quarterback and rovig as wide receiver
