Re: Coaching candidates
Point Loma Nazarene won their game handily tonight. They are in the D2 Final Four.

Re: Coaching candidates
Just my first impression, but this seems like a stronger group of candidates than previously.

Re: Coaching candidates
We should end up with a solid leader for the program from this group. Nice work on selecting a variety of backgrounds - 2 head coaches and 3 assistants; youth and experience; significant major university experience; etc.
Can't wait for next year!

While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

I was very excited about Fish when he was hired. In the end, he was...probably better than Huse, maybe?Bobcat4Ever wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2019 12:38 pmJust my first impression, but this seems like a stronger group of candidates than previously.
It strikes me that I'm not particularly qualified to evaluate coaches, let alone candidates. They'll hire who they hire, and I'll hope for the best.

Re: Coaching candidates
There's always the possibility that MSU/Bozeman is a black hole for coaches.

Danny Sprinkle. Ex Bobcat star guard asst at Cal Fullerton.
Andy Hill — Hill has worked for former University of Montana Hall of Fame player and head coach Larry Krystkowiak over the last eight seasons at the University of Utah.
Jono Metzger-Jones — The current UC Davis assistant spent five seasons as an assistant at the University of Montana, the first three working for Wayne Tinkle and the last two working for current Griz head coach Travis DeCuire.
Jim Shaw — Shaw, an All-American at Western Oregon in 1985, is now in his fourth season as the head coach at his alma mater. But his first coaching job came in the Big Sky Conference back in 1986.
Ryan Looney — Looney’s Point Loma Nazarene school earned the No. 1 seed in the Division II West Regional on the way to winning the regional title. The 29-4 Sea Lions will face Queens (New York) in the NCAA Division II national tournament on Wednesday night.

Re: Coaching candidates
Here's a big reason for Looney success this season: Yes that's Jasmine's little brother. Grad transfer possibilities? Probably wishful thinking-I'll bet the kid ends up at Gonzaga next season.

I'd be pretty happy with Shaw, Looney, or Sprinks. Agreed wholeheartedly on ex-friz in this particular situation.ilovethecats wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2019 3:34 pmLooney or Sprinks would be great. I'm a big no on old Griz assistants....

Re: Coaching candidates
Personally, I don't believe that. But I do think the state of Montana as a brand is being oversold. Coaches with a ton of upside are probably a bit more career oriented (in my judgment) and the notion of taking a pay cut to live in a mountain town doesn't have the same appeal as it does to someone who's already retirement age, or close to.
The United States is a very large country and there are a lot of very nice places. I just think we've got to offer more than a nice town. And maybe we are, but the administration is not doing a good job of conveying that and selling that.
UM is the university equivalent of Axe Body Spray and essential oils.

Re: Coaching candidates
The Looney/Hommes Point Loma game is live tonight at 7:30 p.m. MDT on the CBS Sports Channel. Took me forever to find it. It seemed like a well-guarded secret on ncaa.com, etc.

Do you ever wonder what Kelvin Samson's career would have become had he become MSU's coach when he was just starting? (The committee didn't even interview him).

Ironically Hommes played at Western Washington in the same league as MSUB.
