Whoever is behind MSU’s Twitter and other recruiting day promos deserves a raise.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

At least seven, possibly eight, 3-star and five 2-star players. Also, the no. 1 player from Vim’s Montana recruits list and the no. 1 player from my most-likely-to-succeed-from-Montana list.
This is the fourth straight year that MSU has totaled 30 (7x3 + 5x2 = 31) or more stars. Prior to that MSU had never topped 20. The total number of stars over the past four years is more than MSU has gotten since star ratings first came out.

Obviously star ratings don’t guarantee success, but the chances of star rated players contributing is greater than unrated players. Not that unrated players can’t make big contributions. They can and do, but the odds are less on the whole.

I get the general sentiment, I do think a higher level of athlete has been recruited the last few years here, which is great.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 07, 2019 7:12 amAt least seven, possibly eight, 3-star and five 2-star players. I also don’t put a ton of stock into those ratings. Last year alone, we had 9 of those stars (Long, White, Putney) not even make it to fall camp. And 6 more of those stars (Metcalf, Duru) are gone already, one year later.
I still think last years class was very solid, but it lost some of its “shine” pretty quickly.

Re: 2019 MSU Recruiting (30 Signees)
I don't agree.
Montana players don't get stars because of where we are located. Idaho often sees the same thing. I've seen us get 2-3* guys from other states that quite honestly wouldn't have been recruited had they played in Montana. They were awful. I'm not going to name names, but trust me, their teammates didn't care about their stars.
Stars are for fans. Stars don't mean ****** once the guys get to campus.
Watch the film. Film will always, always, always matter more than stars. And honestly, these companies just throw out 3* rankings like candy. Oh, you got a scholarship offer from anybody and a letter from a P5 and went to a USC camp? 3 stars! Honestly, look at how these kids rankings change after they get scholarship offers. If you really want to paper scout, scout off of scholarship offers. It's still lacking, but it's better than freaking stars.

15 of the 24 projected starters have star ratings. Less than half of MSU’s recruits have had star ratings. Like I said, “on the whole” star rated players are more apt to succeed. It isn’t a slam on unrated players.bobcat99 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 07, 2019 9:30 amI don't agree.

I think Williams is going to Fresno State as a "Blue Shirt". Here is an explanation:Montanabob wrote: ↑Thu Feb 07, 2019 12:25 pmWell our last listed potential recruit, Evan Williams from Saint Francis, Mountain View, CA has a few classmates that made the cut for football on NLI signing day yesterday.

What does it mean to be a blue shirt athlete?
Blue shirting is becoming a more popular (but hardly common) way to creatively manage the number of athletic scholarships. Blue shirt rules allow for unrecruited players to be awarded a scholarship at the start of freshman practice. This allows a team that may have too many commits to essentially borrow against their next year’s scholarship total. The rules are rather strict in regard to what is defined as being “unrecruited.” That means there was no official visit taken by the athlete, the coach didn’t visit the athlete at home, there was no National Letter of Intent signed, and no form of athletic aid.
Given those recruiting restrictions, it is still a pretty rare occurrence for a student-athlete to be considered for a blue shirt scholarship offer.
What all of the many different color shirts tells you is that it’s now more important than ever to know exactly how a coach plans to bring you on board and why, and what that means to your eligibility. Keep in mind, being a red, gray, green, or blue shirt may not be the start you imagined, but many athletes have benefited from these different scholarship scenarios and go on to enjoy successful college careers.
