WBB versus UNC

Post by Catlady » Sat Jan 12, 2019 6:16 pm

Need to cover the 3! Need to cover the 3!
Great game with Grizz and UNC. I can’t figure out why, but Montana didn’t realize that UNC was a good 3 pt shooting team. I hope the cats don’t make the same mistake. If we protect against 3s I think we have a chance!

Although we rank 4th in the league in scoring defense, we rank in the bottom tier defending the 3 ball but mid-pack in field goal defense.

Great players make you pay unless you have top tier defenders or individually have a bad night.... think Tyler Hall, think Steph Curry, think the ladies I mentioned in the conference prediction thread and the SDSU game thread. Like a lot of teams, we don't have the defensive stars to stop them anymore than any other team did. South Dakota State and Idaho have the best all time 3 ball shooters in their respective league histories and rank in the top tier in the entire NCAA WBB.

Although UNC does not have the same prowess/notoriety at the 3 pt range as SDSU and Idaho they will get you there too if you don't have a good defensive game. Savannah Smith has been unstoppable against any number of defenders in leading their offense. Obviously they are functioning well as a team under the new coach and Smith is showing why she was the league MVP last year, averaging over 18 per game this year.

As I stated in the conference prediction thread, I felt this was the toughest stretch of opponents we would be playing, i.e. Portland State, Idaho, and UNC... 3 of the top teams in the league in a four game stretch. If we would have come out of this stretch 50/50 I would have said we would be a top tier league contender..... but I expect a long night tonight.

Actually UNC only ranks 5th in the league in scoring offense but they are 3rd in scoring defense. They are kinda mid pack in overall FG% made (5th) and are 3rd best in the league at the 3 ball at about 33%. They have the best rebounding margin in the league and rank better than MSU in both offensive and defensive rebounding.

It isn't just "defending the 3 ball" that will cost the Bobcats this game. UNC is a well balanced team, that seems to play with good fundamentals, that will beat you in any number of areas offensively and defensively if you aren't disciplined and ready to play. The ladies better be "girded" for battle in all areas and better be sharp both offensively and defensively ("duh statement" when you are playing the best in the league and the league MVP).

How did that happen! UNC never loses at home. Great win. I hope I can catch a replay.

Good news! The women's program has been a perennial Top 4 Big Sky team since about 2001. Binford has been able to take that success and turn it into some very good teams. This is not her most talented team, but she continues to get the most our of what she has! Is there a plan in place to have the Big Sky tourney at regular champion sites again? I loved being able to go to Bozeman or Missoula to catch a bunch of games in 3-4 days (those were the days!). Keep it up ladies!

Tori Martell with 19! We've all been waiting for her to get going. Lundberg only had 10. Squires and Wright with 14 a piece. Madeline Smith, another who's been struggling a bit, with 16. This team's just need a couple more cylinders firing. They got it tonight.

I was just about to post the same thing. 41% from 3 ball range as a team. Smith must have had a field day underneath. Welcome back Tori...5 of 8 from beyond the arc....that should bring some confidence back! Even Mochi was 2 of 3 from deep. People have been commenting that Wright isn't scoring but she nails 14 tonight.

Nice team effort showing they certainly can be in the top tier if they start hitting on all cylinders all the time. It will force other teams to play honest rather than crowding Lundberg if scoring is distributed like that

Savannah Smith must not like to shoot...only took 40% of Northern Colorado shots tonight! Took 20 shots from 3 ball range....guess that might have been driven by the need to catch up trailing late.

I give up trying to figure out this team. I am just going to shut up, go to the games and root for the Cats

It’s our expert analysis that made the difference. I’m sure this coach’s first stop after every game. Keep figuring!
