Hardin wants Gitmo prisoners

Post by SonomaCat » Thu Apr 23, 2009 7:07 pm

I'm still a little confused by the arguments that housing these prisoners would pose any special risk to the community. I'm trying to imagine a scenario where the community would be harmed as a result, and I'm coming up empty. Anyone else have any theories ... or is the MT delegation just saying what the polls tell them to say?

It's still strange to me that they constructed a prison with no contracts in place to generate revenue. I guess "build it and they will come" doesn't always work?

I don't see a problem with the housing of prisoners at the Hardin facility, however I think Max makes a good point in regards to the U.S. Courthouse in Billings being able to handle all of the cases. This could be a great job creator in both Billings and Hardin.

Many people were against converting the Rocky Mountain Lab in Hamilton to a bio-4 lab because of a potential terrorist threat to the community in housing the deadliest diseases known to man, including Anthrax, Ebola, and SARS. The impact study found the risk to be neglible. $66 million in anti-terror funds were spent converting the facility, which began operating in 2008 under the new designation.

I would think wherever they house the prisoners anti-terror funds will be spent to minimize the impact.

Here are my issues to begin with

1. This "prison" was not built under standards that the state of Montana will approve to house state inmates.
2. This jail cannot be used as a regional jail because the state of Montana will not approve it for Montana State inmates.
3. How can a jail that is not suitable for Montana state inmates or for federal inmates be suitable for terrorists (alleged) from other countries.
4. All of the indian reservations in the state of Montana are considered "soverign." This opens questions on all levels of jurisdiction and control.
5. Do not for one minute think that the Crow tribe will not hire all employees as "Crow Tribal preferred."
6. It took the State of Montana, the CS&KT and the US Fish and Game more than 3 years to get cross managment of the National Bison Range in Moiese, to a level that "appears" satisfactory.

7. There is not one person that will convince me that any prison in the State of Montana should house these "terrorists," let alone a "prison" that would be under the sole operational control of a group of people that are jurisdictionally soverign to the rules and laws set by the State of Montana.

If you are a concerned citizen of this state please contact our reprentatives in Washington and Governor Schweitzer, they must know that we are as opposed to it as they are.

Good points, ckatz. I wasn't aware of those facts. I'd now agree that it's a very bad idea.

So ... not only did they build a prison without contracts in place, but they also built it in a way that didn't meet government standards?

Turn it into a themed bar and casino. Call it The Slammer.

Our machines are so hot and drinks are so cold that 10 to 20 doesn't sound too bad.

Make a night out of it. Hell make a year out of it.

Come to The Slammer and get robbed.

I'm pretty sure the prison is not located on the reservation.

Either way most of the reservation will get in there one way or another.

If I was a terrorist, I would be demanding that I stay in in Cuba were I could have year access to sunny warm weather and an exercise yard with beautiful views of the bay. I would have to call it prison paradise. The jail in Harden, cold bleak winters, followed by hot summers. Limited access to exercise yards as the cold winter weather is not conducive of daily prayers. Views of empty brown grass fields for most of the year. Oh, I forgot, the wind never stops blowing. Easy choice me.

I am all for bring those terrorist to Hardin.

We have some Muslims at work that do their prayers in a tiny conference room with no windows whenever they do them, so I guess they can do them indoors (they just need to figure out which direction Mecca is in relation to the room). But I agree ... being in jail in Hardin would not be an ideal situation for a prisoner, especially for people accustomed to warm weather.

I am all for it as long as nobody gets prayer mats.

That is a luxury item.

If the mats are that important then they should have stayed out of prison in order to have access to them.

It's not a violation of any human rights, it just makes life easy for them after they committed horrible acts to end up there in the first place.

A bit off topic, but how f'ing stupid was it to build a $27,000,000 detention facility for 460 inmates with no contracts or commitments to house potential inmates. :? #-o

Just like most projects, nobody (politicians) cares since it isnt "their money" so they do it to look good instead of making sense.
