Johnson tabbed as new MSU Nordic ski coach

Long-time juniors coach Matthew Johnson has been named the new head coach of the Montana State Nordic ski team, MSU athletic director Peter Fields announced on Friday. Johnson recently served as head juniors coach with the Alaska Winter Stars in Anchorage this past winter.
 
“I’m excited to be joining the Bobcat family,” Johnson said. “Montana State has a great history and tradition of success. The ski program has the resources and support it needs to continue competing at a top level. In addition, the Bozeman area has some of the best skiing and terrain in the country. I’m looking forward to getting started.”
 
Johnson’s club background also includes a three-year stint with the Utah Nordic Alliance in Salt Lake City as well as a three-year tenure at Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont. In addition, he served as wax technician at the 2013 USSA World Junior/U23 Worlds Teams in Liberec, Czech Republic.
 
A four-year member of the ski team at Middlebury College in Vermont, Johnson served as captain his senior season. During his second season at Middlebury, Johnson competed in the 2006 World Juniors in Slovenia.
 
As a junior racer, the Anchorage native competed for Team Alaska at the USSA Junior Olympics and captured two gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals for his efforts. Johnson earned USAA All-America kudos from 2001-04.
 
“Matt possesses a strong background in program and student-athlete development,” Fields said. “He has also worked on both coasts as well as the Rocky Mountain region, and is well respected. Matt sees the big picture and is very motivated to continue the level of excellence the Bobcat ski program has established.”
 
Johnson received his Bachelor of Arts degree in environmental studies and geography from Middlebury College in 2008. He will begin his duties at MSU in August.
