Re: Vote for Coach Binford
I think it is a great honor for Coach Binford to get this nomination, but just because I'm a
big Bobcat fan, I'm not going to vote for her to receive the top honor. Kudos to her for being nominated!
But the top honor, hands down, goes to Geno. The guy reloads each and every year, but his teams
play with a degree of consistency and excellence unmatched by any other coach in any other sport.
In fact, there are two BIG things I wish that Trish would emulate from Geno--Copy, whatever you want
to call it:
1. Watch Geno's team play. Notice that they NEVER let up, EVER! Doesn't matter if he is 40 points ahead.
They play with incredible effort, hustle, energy ALL 40 minutes of the game. Why does that happen?'
Because this is the way Geno runs his practices. Day in, day out.
2. Notice that Geno RARELY substitutes. The battles that take place during practices and scrimmages
determines his starting 5 and that's who he sticks with unless someone gets hurt, gets in foul trouble,
or during the last 2 or 3 minutes of the game. He makes certain that his players are in the very top
physical condition. The starters have a great chemistry with each other and it is no surprise that the
players are capable of anticipating what their teammates are doing on the court.
They play like a finely tuned machine, like programmed robots.
So to me Geno has ALL FIVE ingredients for great teams:
A. First he has great players who can flat out shoot the ball. (But other teams also have this; several in fact)
B. Second, he DEVELOPS his players so that they are constantly improving (not all coaches are as good at this)
C. Third, his players are extremely well conditioned physically (not all coaches are as good at this)
D. Fourth, he coaches his players to ALWAYS play at 100% effort on both offense and defense, whether it is a game
or whether it is a practice or scrimmage. (MOST coaches do not do this at all)
E. Finally, he rewards the players' efforts by naming five starters and sticking with them during the game.
The coordination, chemistry and anticipation from doing this are obvious when you watch his teams
play (Few other coaches do this).
My vote goes to Geno, the greatest basketball coach I have ever observed, as evidenced by his achievements and the performance of his players, year
in and year out. No, I'm not a Uconn fan, but I have to admire what this coach has achieved, and continues to achieve.
Again, congratulations to Coach Binford for the nomination. But you know, when you have one coach who is so outrageously successful, maybe
it is time to go attend one of his camps to see just how he gets it done. MSU might learn some good stuff.

I wonder how well Geno and Binford would do if they switched teams?

Re: Vote for Coach Binford
Binford would win every game by 150 points. She has over 1,000 more votes than Geno in this highly scientific online poll, so this must be true. #ScienceHawks86 wrote:I wonder how well Geno and Binford would do if they switched teams?

Re: Vote for Coach Binford
I'll admit that Geno is a good coach but once a women's bb team established dominance it is much easier for them to continue it based on historical evidence. Geno will get whatever players he wants and all 5 of his starters are probably the best at their position in the country. Other teams may have one or two players that are great on a national level. Plus UCONN has the psychological advantage and you see it every game. Teams miss shots they normally don't and have turnovers they normally wouldn't. I'm not saying he's not a good coach, I'm just saying women's bb is a different beast.
Is Binford the top coach in the country? Probably not realistically but the hurdles she has to overcome at a school like MSU put her on the same level as a lot of the other top contenders.
