Bears use hot-shooting 2nd half to bury Bobcats
Bobcat Beat
Montana State’s defense disappeared for a time on Saturday night.
Northern Colorado made 16-of-20 second half field goals, including 5-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc in downing MSU 83-73 in Greeley, Colo.
“When you allow the other team to shoot 80 percent (in the second half) you’re not going to win,” said Bobcat coach Brad Huse in an MSU press release. “I’m proud of my guys for how hard they played, how they hung in there, and how they rallied around each other. We just needed a few stops in the second half, and we couldn’t get them.”
Senior forward Derrick Barden grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 14 points as UNC accumulated a 33-19 advantage on the glass. Northern Colorado (9-5 in league) moved into sole possession of second place in the Big Sky Conference with three weeks to play. The win was UNC’s 13th straight at home this season.
“This is a difficult place to play,” Huse said. “They have a great environment and the fans are right on top of you, it’s very compact. It’s very impressive what they’ve done in terms of winning games here this year.”
Montana State shot 50 percent in the first half and 54 percent after halftime, but the effort couldn’t overcome an game that saw the hosts miss almost as many free throws (3) as field goals. Senior forward Flavien Davis led MSU with 17 points. He was one of five Bobcats in double-figures in scoring. Sophomore guard Marcus Colbert had 14 points, freshman wing Stephan Holm 11, senior guard Antonio Biglow 13, and Colorado native junior Terrell Brown 11. Colbert added five assists for the Bobcats, Biglow four.
Montana State falls to 7-7 in the Big Sky and remains in a four-way tie for fifth as MSU, Eastern Washington, Sacramento State and Idaho State (6-7) battle it out for bids to the six-team Big Sky Tournament. ISU visits Montana State on Thursday night.
