UC Davis to MWC as non-football member

Post by damnyoutuesday » Tue Dec 10, 2024 3:09 pm

Looks like they will move to the MWC while staying in the Big Sky as a football only member. They join Villanova and Georgetown in playing down to FCS for football

I wonder if that will impact their football membership with the Big Sky.
Also got to think this really pisses Sac State off!

What do you mean by impact? I thought the report said they were staying in the Big Sky for football. Are you suggesting that if this does all go through, the Big Sky will kick them out?

It won't change a single thing with their Big Sky membership because it doesn't effect the conference or its members in any way. Nobody is going to bring a vote to kick Davis out because of this

UC-Davis is an infinitely better school than Sac State.

Probably the strategy is to let them grow their football program so they can bring that to FBS and the MWC in the future? Maybe the basketball $$$ will generate more booster enthusiasm so they can add a couple of decks to their neat, but very small, stadium.

The idea is that they would start allocating MWC-level funding to athletics, rather than the typical Big West/Big Sky budgets. This could presumably boost their football program, resulting in a much stronger UCD team year in, year out. While the Cats and griz likely wouldn't be concerned, as they already prioritize significant football investments, the rest of the conference might not be as enthusiastic about this shift.

Is the MWC basketball payout large enough to divert it away from MWC sports to football? Seems like they would be sacrificing being competitive in the conference sports to grow a non-conference sport that isn't guaranteed to ever move up. I agree that's probably the plan going into it but I wonder how much money will be available for it.

Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!
