I haven't really seen Beltran play. From his high school accolades and film, it seems he should be neck and neck with Rovig and Bauman. What is going on there?
6'0" 180
That's not why.

The coaches probably just don't think he's on the same level as Bauman/Rovig.

Is he that big? He looks like about 165

You think the staff that started Chris Murray as a freshman is holding Beltran back for being 6'0" 180?

Also, I know the suggestion that it will be Beltran is meant as a joke, but Choate has said that the scrimmage will weigh heavier than anything else. We don't know where his production came from, but if he was sharp and it was with the one's... maybe?
He hasn't had any reps with the first team, that I'm aware of.

Maybe after this they'll give him Rovig's reps, and make it a Bauman/Beltran battle.
We get it..you.dont like Rovig. Get over it
Should he be excited about 3/7 for 14 yards and a pick? Should that be changing his mind?
That stat line is consistent with what we seen out of Rovig. Lots of people want to gloss over the fact that Rovig’s big game was against a subpar defense. He doesn’t have the luxury of playing against a D like that in fall camp. Having said that, if he is our best option then fine, play him but anyone being reasonable should be changing their mind a little just based on the fact that he had all the indicators pointing toward him and he is no longer the odds on favorite to win the job. That should be concerning.

There is a reason TA played QB last year.
Yes, because Rovig broke his foot.
I was listening to a Choate interview the other day where he spoke to that situation.

He reiterated that he did intend Rovig to start before he got hurt. He said they felt they had to in order to preserve Andersen's body, because he was so beat up.

He then went on to say, if I understood him, that Andersen was still going to be a QB as his primary role. They just wanted to get some snaps off of his body.

This is an explanation that makes more sense to me. The plan, it would seem, was to split the job. I can buy that.

I'm not saying that 3" and 25 pounds and he would be the "guy" however his size is a major factor, if things are close they will take more size every time.

If all else is equal, sure you take the bigger player. Football is a big man's game.

But I sincerely doubt that size is the only thing keeping Beltran out of the competition to start. It seems a lot more likely that the staff just doesn't think he's on the same level.

Since Murray started as a true freshman halfway through the season, what are the odds that one of the true freshman we have on the team now is playing by mid season? Do any of them have that potential?

Maybe, and maybe Bauman before Rovig. I'm not always right.

Actually, I thought I remembered Choate saying Jonsen was on alert if we have a disaster at the QB position.

Interesting if correct. Where did this depth chart come from? If it is correct as of today are Thelan and Knight so far behind that it couldn't change as the season moves on?

Just for fun, if both top 2 QB’s are not ready, why not slide Jonsen back in and continue what we had last year? I don’t see Troy going back to that role again. Between his desire to play LB and shoulder surgery I think he won’t be back there.

The list is one poster’s ranking. As for the freshman, I would not even consider them as possible candidates for the year. Just too young and not enough time in the system. They would have to be a freak athlete like Murray or Troy and those are very rare.

Honest question, if we had the next freshman phenomenon on our roster(examples: lulay, Denarius McGhee) does Choate have the ability to recognize it. Choate is a great coach, happy as hell to have him. However, I don't think he can recognize a good qb if he hit him in the ass from 50 yards out. Have a feeling that Choate would choose a qb that has a year or two in the system over someone that is flat out gifted. If the next Lulay is on our roster, I don't think he would be given a chance. What do you all think?

I think you are creating your own narrative. There isn't any evidence of this.
