I was at the scrimmage. I thought Bauman was shaky the first couple of series but got better as the scrimmage went on. Rovig was no better. Not surprised at this as it is their first time in a long time they had bullets flying at them. They were up against a good, tough defense.

I thought the best QB out there today was Ruben Beltran. He had three nice completions and seems to handle pressure with ease. Even in practice he has good poise and does not make mistakes. He is a gamer. Doesn’t have the arm Bauman does but two of his completions were long passes rolling out. I think he opened some eyes today with his opportunity.
I'm guessing Beltran was not going against the first team defense?
No, but he didn’t have the first team offense either. He goes under the radar with all the attention on Rovig and Bauman. If you ask Dennis Erickson about Beltran you will be surprised at his answer.
Unfortunately I don't have access to Mr. Erickson. Can you tell me what you think he'd say?

I didn’t do the math, but it looks like we averaged around 5 yards per carry on the ground. Our best back Ifanse averaged 4 yards per carry and others were over 5. We should be a very good rushing team and just a need a QB that can manage a game and keep defenses honest.

That he liked his poise and smarts. He thought he was a Senior. Was surprised he is Rs freshman. Kind of reminded him of himself in college.

Per source: Bauman will be named starter Monday or sooner. He played above expectations today. He completed a higher percentage and his ypa was better than expected. They were hoping someone would complete 50% and be 1:1 ratio touchdowns to interceptions. Bauman met or exceeded everything except TD:Int. But the coaches were okay with that since one interception went off a receivers face.

Per another source: the MSU defense is as good as any I’ve ever seen in the FCS.
That source must have not watched the bison game last year, or any bison game in the last 8 years. Cats defense may be awesome, but it won’t be close to that.
The MSU defense that played NDSU last year is not even close to the MSU defense you're going to see this year. "Never again." :-^
That’s your opinion. Until they prove it it’s only that. The Bison D has only given up 10-12 points a game for about 8 years running now. Come chat with me when the Cats do that.

Should this happen I think we are going to see a much more diverse and unpredictable Offense on the field even with a new QB. Should Casey be named, well done for him. =D^ There would have to be a lot of confidence for him in knowing that he is being backed up by a pair of QB's that can keep the team rolling on Offense if he's out.

I feel a lot more confident in this teams ability to improve over last year with Troy on Defense and a more multiple O!

That is definitely hyperbole regarding the defense, but the point stands that this is a super talented unit that the QB's have to face. Brooks Nuanez said it's one of the most talented groups he's covered.
He said “talented” as any I’ve ever seen.
Here’s the comment verbatim:
“Defense is straight nasty
Among the most talented units I’ve ever seen”

Since it’s just me passing it along I realize it doesn’t carry much weight. It came during a conversation about something else that I was told is confidential, so I don’t feel at liberty to give out his name. I will say that it’s from someone who we all know and respect. I expect you will hear him repeat this for yourself soon.

So you’ll have Brooks Nuanez and my source saying basically the same thing. It’s definitely not hyperbole.

Something few people are taking into account is that the scrimmage was live. That may have been good for running quarterbacks, like Andersen and Murray, but it didn’t play into Rovig or Bauman’s hands. Had they been wearing red I think Bauman’s numbers would’ve been slightly better, which would probably make a big difference. I don’t expect very many quarterbacks will do much better than Bauman did today.

Had his receiver just caught the one pass that went off his face mask (a catch receivers make at least 90% of the time), he would’ve been 7-11-1, 87? yards, one TD. That’s a passer rating of 141.9.

The Cats defense will be very good. If the offense had that electric QB like we've had for a large part of the 21st century, then I'd say this is a team that can make a legit NC run. Having said that, if either QB has numbers like 12-20 185 yds. 2TD, 1 INT. Then the Cats can win the Big Skyand make a SF possibly. The team WILL go as far as the QB. I do not believe QB is a complete weakness. I will know a lot more after SE Missouri game. That team can match right up. If we can beat them that is a great win moving forward. 20 days....

Why? I have never been one to second guess Choate, but not sure I get this one. We have good depth at both positions but seems to me the LB room is a little older than the rb room. Ifanse, Sumner, Perry and Hosey can hold down the fort for years to come IMO. Hopefully this is just a package specific thing and he practices the rest of the week at LB.

Interesting. Guess he will not crack the lineup at MLB this year so using him as a H-back/ power back isn’t a bad idea

I mean, I guess I get if they want a short yardage package for him...but I don't like this at all.

Even if he isn't going to break the depth chart at LB, keep him learning the position for a year.

He is. Being a short-yardage back isn't exactly hard. Plus, Jaharie is a bright kid so I have zero problems with making his skillset more versatile.

I imagine he will fill last year's "Big Bacon" role.
