Observations from the Spring game

Post by MountainCat » Sat Apr 06, 2019 3:14 pm

Besides the weather (wind and rain), it’s fun to watch football again! The players look good, fast, and strong! So far, Tucker Rovig is trending the right direction and looks good, as of now he definitely looks the part of the QB front runner for the Fall. Under Coach Ioane, the defense definitely looks different. Less penetrating up front by the D-line, but faster on the back end, swarming to the ball quicker. There are things to be excited about out here today, what did you guys see that you did or didn’t like?

Sterk is huge.
Noticeable size gains across the board.
No midlevel passing.
Bauman looks the part, needs to get the ball out faster.
Rovig looked improved.
Had lots of drops.

I only watched a little bit on TV, but I saw Bauman get sacked by #20 bc he didn't feel the pressure and didn't step up well. Gotta get rid of the ball young man! Fast decisions are necessary for a QB. This is to be expected though, he's young and inexperienced.

Rovig looks like he's the starter. Good for him. I was wrong about him, it appears.

One thing to keep in mind when trying to take things away from the offensive performance, Coach Miller said he was going to keep things very vanilla and wanted to get a good look at the basic schemes with the offense.

Look at the above post.

Defenses almost always do better than the offense in spring scrimmages.

Jalen Cole was not listed on the Spring Roster provided today. Didn't see him on the field or on the sideline. Any news that I missed.

My biggest takeaway is that Amandre Williams and Sterk are going to terrorize a lot of offenses. Williams is a dude. I'm predicting 20 sacks just between those 2.

Rovig is the leader of the 3 young QBs by a lot. It will be between him and Murray. Both Bauman and Beltran looked rattled and were late and inaccurate on a lot of passes.

Price Jr. And Gibson are going to be solid, our secondary is going to be great.

Loved the pressure off the edges from the D. Several CB blitzes that caught the offense odd guard.

Team tackling was better than we have seen in a long time. 3 or 4 guys in on almost every tackle.

Justin Cauley is going to see some action. He's quick and shifty.

Who is 96? Looked like he was playing some LB.

Amandre Williams. He's going to be versatile.

1. Size, size, size. Sterk, Beson, TA, Sumner, Askelson, L Kidd J Choate all impressed me with look.

2. Dline with Marx and Beson at Tackles was fast. We look deep at LB.

3. Offense was vanilla, but II and SumnerLOOKS SOLID.

4. Rovig looked good, but Chris did too in drills.if Chris is eligible, he will be hard to turn away, such an athlete.

5 Sterk and William’s are WOW.

Jalen was on the sideline in civies. He sat out the scrimmage.

Benson looked like he got a bad stinger to his shoulder but went back in a series later.

He is still trying to work his way back from the nasty head/neck injury he suffered against the Griz.

Oh, and Tyrel Burgess was out there too. Someone wrote in another thread that he left the program.

Vim, did you happen to notice any 300 lb potential transfer nose tackles watching the scrimmage?

A guy can dream . . . .

There was actually a bigger guy on the defensive sideline that Cole was talking to that I didn't recognise. Not sure if he was a player or not.
