QB Update

Troy is where he belongs right now, BUT....There is a completely false narrative that’s been popping up time and again that needs correcting. I get where it comes from, after TR got hurt Choate said it was unfortunate because they were thinking it was time to go with Rovig. That was a PR comment to appease the disgruntled (and give Tucker incentive to keep hammering). Truth/reality is Choate was pot committed on TA. After just 2 weeks and with 8 screws holding 2 bones together in his hand TA marched right back in to command the huddle at Portland State. After season TA was offered a choice for his sacrifices. QB for 2019 or LB. TA chose defense. End of TA at QB discussion (except whenever Choate talks about TA, always says “in the LB room for now,” or “don’t screw it up or Miller will take him back.”)I think Rovig will be fine, with a healthy dose of TJonsen as well as the occasional Kassis or Andersen.

This may be the case, but as I recall Andersen was practicing with the defense this same week that TR was going to be named the starter, was he not?

TA has practiced packages with the defense since his freshman year. Particularly 3rd down blitz and stunt calls. The answer is no to “practicing” with defense. The bye week and week leading up to the Idaho game he didn’t do much other than hot/cold a sprained ankle (from EWU game), watch film, and throw a ball around a bit.

If memory serves me correctly, and based on my wife's comments it doesn't, wasn't the reason that TA played QB against Portland State was because of the way their defense lined up and the coaching staff felt they were very susceptible to a QB run game like ours with TA? TA ran for 211 yards that day, the CATS had 328 yards rushing and 491 yard of total offense. That was why TR didn't start against PSU but was going to start against EWU until he was injured......I believe????

You are corrected. And Rovig "floated" 2 perfect passes for completions, one on a nice wheel route out of the backfield for 30 yards plus... still not worried!

Welp... I guess I haven't made a ton of friends on this board yet. Cheer up folks. It's okay to have different perspectives & opinions.

What will the board say to the prediction that TA will be back at starting QB this Fall? This will be the case I think. I don't see either Roving or Bauman being our starting QB when our jet lands in Lubbock this Fall.

Id make that bet all day everyday. Regardless of qb situation, Troy is now a full time linebacker who will get a handful of snaps each game on offense.

Imagine that... Gonna be a redshirt sophomore, maybe 20 years old and he is starting to fill out. Wouldn’t be surprised if he has added some zip to the ball as well.

Many of you may remember a skinny kid with the initials DP who "just wasn't ready" his redshirt freshmen year, but attended some QB camps and put on some muscle the following spring and summer. Ended up having a very nice sophomore season.

I am anxious to see what Tucker can do this year. I think the kid will rise to the occasion and take control of the team. We have the pieces in place around him, so he sees success. Physical and mental maturity is very important for these guys. He has had the time and the challenges to allow growth and maturity and now is his time to run the offense. I believe we have the talent at WR to really help him out by making the big catches and getting yards after the catch.

Members of the offense say they are seeing good things out of both Rovig and Bauman early in camp.

“All summer they’ve been competing their butts off. They’re both fighting,” right guard Lewis Kidd said. “Whoever is going to be the guy, we’re going to trust him and we’re going to block the same way.

“We’re confident in either of them. It’s just who’s got the most consistency. Both have been doing a good job of taking control of the huddle and really taking command of the offense.”

“It’s a close call right now between both of them,” left tackle Mitch Brott said. “They’re both showing great leadership skills. They’ve made a big step since last year and they both have a lot more confidence.”

So after all this debate (31 pages) the Cats didn't bring in a transfer QB. Is it because we couldn't or because Choate realized we had the guys we needed already? Only time will tell by I am optimistic base on the comments I'm hearing, both from players and coaches.
