Re: James Williams?
James was slotted to be a starter and a training video from MSU Football's instagram page showed him power cleaning like three days ago with the rest of the team. He is either transferring up to an FBS school closer to home or simply going to a school closer to home.Montanabob wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 12:22 pmI look at it in a different perspective...…

Re: James Williams?
IF he does transfer mid semester, does he have to sit out? Or would he stay in school @ MSU, then Transfer? Or at this point does it even matter and we need to move on?

If it’s true about Williams (I assume it is), that makes 9 players from last years 31 player class that are gone, one year in. Various reasons behind all of those, but that’s still not a great % of retention one year in.

I hope he stays... But I also think healthy and honest discussions with athletes and coaches may be driving transfer decisionsVimSince03 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 12:26 pmJames was slotted to be a starter and a training video from MSU Football's instagram page showed him power cleaning like three days ago with the rest of the team. Re: James Williams?
I agree, and that’s probably the case on a few of these departures. I don’t think that’s the case with Williams, he’d be the starter next year if he’s here.Montanabob wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 12:54 pmI hope he stays... Choate’s average recruit class is 32.5 and rising. The prior four years it was 24. He only has 63 scholarships to work with. Something had to give.

None of the players that are transferring were released due to scholarship limitations if that is what you are getting at.

MSU has brought in 160 players over the last five years. First off you can’t have that many players on a team. Secondly, you don’t have enough scholarships to keep them around. You can only have 85 players on scholarship. You can split up the 63 you have, but can’t divvy them up beyond 85 players. There’s just no way to keep bring in 30+ players a year and not have attrition. Some players are happy with a partial. Some expect to get bumped up. It’s definitely a factor every year when you bring in 30+ players per year.
I’m not saying I have a problem with it. I’m not losing any sleep over these players transferring. Whatever Choate’s doing, its working.

I'm not disagreeing with what your saying. All I am saying is that James Williams does not fall in that category of someone that might have their scholly takin away... or maybe using a partial scholly… or lost their spot to a new player or something...iaafan wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 2:19 pmJust do the math.mslacatfan wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 2:04 pmYeah... He was definitely a full ride player, who had as bright of a future as any young player on the team.
Yes, attrition is bound to happen every year, especially when you are bringing in that many players each year. BUT, not with some of your best talent.
anyway, I'm movin on. Super excited for next year, still loads of talent on this team across the board.

Re: James Williams?
I agree. Also, tough to keep track but if I'm looking at this correctly, there are seven players gone from one recruiting class. This has to be below average for all of FCS, or college football in general for that matter. Secondly, James Williams is the only one gone that was actually slated to be a starter from what I can see.iaafan wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 2:19 pmJust do the math.mslacatfan wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 2:04 pmYeah... I'm just going to say it - this transfer portal thing is complete bullsh*t. MSU (and every other program that gets affected by this) spends a ton of money recruiting and developing these players, only to have them transfer out before they do a damn thing. It's complete garbage, and is seriously going to lower the quality of play at the FCS level. This is different than the drop-down situation. I don't like it one bit. And at the end of the day, I don't think it's good on the human development side of things either.

I personally like it. If a player previously wanted to transfer, he had to request permission from his coach. The coach was in control, who himself has no real obligation to stay and teach the young men he recruited to come play for him.BozoneCat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 3:29 pmI'm just going to say it - this transfer portal thing is complete bullsh*t. College football players had no power before, in a game where millions are made off their hard work. If a college student who also plays football wants to transfer to another school to change his education or just change his scenery for various reason, he should be allowed to do that.

Re: James Williams?
completely see both sides. 100% agree that the kids should be able to make their own decisions with this stuff (even though it might piss me off). But man, this could REALLY crush the talent level at the FCS level... makes it pretty simple for any player that is halfway decent to just transfer out to a bigger program....CelticCat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 3:37 pmI personally like it. Re: James Williams?
From what I understand, the Transfer Portal basically allows players to reopen their recruitment and be contacted by potential transfer institutions while still enrolled and participating in football at their current school. To me, it sure seems like a great mechanism for FBS programs to snap up the top young FCS talent they missed out on for whatever reason during the original recruiting process. Whether this is good or bad for the players involved (the grass is always greener...) or the health of college football overall I'm not sure, but it seems to put FCS and non-Power 5 FBS schools at a rather large disadvantage when it comes to retaining their top young talent.BozoneCat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 05, 2019 3:29 pmI'm just going to say it - this transfer portal thing is complete bullsh*t.
