If I remember correctly, we thought he might transfer even before he got here.

Best of luck, this sucks but Choate will find someone to fill that hole.

Sad to see these kids quit. Glad Choate is running the type of program that kids look for an out. I want it to be tough and for there to be high expectations. For those that make it to the end, it will be a very rewarding experience.

So...do the Bobcats actually have defensive tackles at this point?

Yup, they moved Troy up and he is killing it and getting past all the offensive tackles without a problem. I was at practice today and he was unstoppableBLACKnBLUEnGOLD wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2019 8:30 pmSo...do the Bobcats actually have defensive tackles at this point?

Chase Benson is probably the only one who's taken real snaps.BLACKnBLUEnGOLD wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2019 8:30 pmSo...do the Bobcats actually have defensive tackles at this point?
Seer Deines has been praised by Choate, but I don't think he's played yet.
Definitely need a transfer at that spot.

Benson, Deines, Travis Yates, Kyle Rygg. Deines played in 4 games last year before redshirting. Yates and Rygg only saw garbage time snaps but both are redshirt sophomores who should be ready. The coaches will likely add one or two transfers to the DL before next fall.91catAlum wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2019 6:58 amChase Benson is probably the only one who's taken real snaps.BLACKnBLUEnGOLD wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2019 8:30 pmSo...do the Bobcats actually have defensive tackles at this point?

Some defensive ends may rotate inside on certain downs. I won't be surprised if Ferriter, Marks, Rollins, or even Sterk see inside reps this year due to the lack of tackles we have. Choate and Hout have a pretty good feel for the dline they want to have out there so I'm really not too worried about the front four. They'll make it work.

Do you think Areta and/or schmidt could be ready to contribute as true freshman?
Areta certainly has the size, ha.

I don't think Areta will be ready without a year of training first. Schmidt will definitely see time and almost certainly will not redshirt.mslacatfan wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2019 8:37 amVimSince03 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2019 8:28 amBenson, Deines, Travis Yates, Kyle Rygg. Re: Players Gone From 2018 Team
Do you think Schmidt will play DT or DE, he looks more like an end to me, maybe even buck. He's got good speed and he looks unblockable should be a great pass rusher. I'd also like to see him play TE, he would make our run game instantly better.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2019 9:28 amI don't think Areta will be ready without a year of training first. Re: Players Gone From 2018 Team
Well...you could go lighter with a kid like Chase Benson who exceeds at holding the line of scrimmage. Or you insert Travis Yates into the spot now that he has gained "good" weight and mass. Or you double-down on his talent and let Seer Deines grow into the position. Phyically, I'm not too worried about guys like Benson, Deines, and Yates. The unfortunate part is that the 1-tech was James' spot to lose. Again, they will likely add a transfer DT who's primary role is at 1-tech.

Re: Players Gone From 2018 Team
I see Schmidt more as a 3-tech but he definitely could rotate in at strong-side end. He's only going to get bigger. Our TE starters will be new next year so it will be interesting to see how those pieces come together after this spring.luckyirishguy25 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2019 9:44 amDo you think Schmidt will play DT or DE, he looks more like an end to me, maybe even buck. I was expecting another young person rant, which is sort of was, but was actually a good perspective and wasn't disrespectful or demeaning.

Re: Players Gone From 2018 Team
Just for some context, that talk is from 2015 when Saban had to dismiss some players that got in trouble. He was not commenting with the context of transfers.
Now if he were to say something about transfers, that would be especially ironic considering how he left LSU, and especially how he left Miami after repeatedly stating he wouldn't.
