So Alex played 4 years.... his freshman year consisted of a couple special teams plays later in the season, so he never redshirted. Now what would you rather have- that true freshman season (couple special teams appearances)..... or a 5th year senior year with him as an All-American?

Alex once he started simply showed himself as an all time great Bobcat LB! Instinctive like a Mac, but faster, a run stopper like a Collins but much better, and he had the ability to disrupt the passing game. The only player I've seen on our roster who is similar in play currently is Hill. Singleton is a beast!

That's funny, but what I mean is don't you end up with a lot of tackles if your defense isn't very good and the other team runs a lot of plays or if the other players on your team aren't making tackles?

I think all you can take from it is that the player is a standout on the team. The worst defenses don't tackle at all, or tackle very few times on the opposing team's way to a TD each drive. The number of plays run by the opposing team could be high just because the Stampeders offense might not be able to stay on the field either because they score quickly, or because they can't muster a first down.

The man should be in the NFL, IMO he has what it takes to be successful there. Several teams are missing the boat on him. Until then the Stamps have the best defensive player in the CFL and he is revered in Calgary. Glad he was a Bobcat!

agreed. You gotta think NFL teams have noticed him by now..... He seems to have everything they look for? great size, athletic, fast, plays with a ton of energy, leadership... his numbers obviously speak to his skill set (tackling, etc.)….

I'm sure he is happy with his current situation, but I would love to see him get a shot in the NFL.

I guess the CFL does not count Tackles for Loss as I can't find them anywhere so I highly doubt I can find his "tackle factor." The fact that he was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player last year and is well on his way on earning it again this year is a good measure though.

No. Unless he's a defensive lineman. A much higher percentage of defensive line tackles are positive plays for the defense.

Or if he's an outside cornerback. Then an especially large numbers of tackles tell you that the football player is not good at all, and is in fact very bad. The vast majority of cornerback tackles are a result of giving up completions in coverage, although some slot cornerbacks make an outsized contribution vs the run or blitzing, especially on teams and in leagues where the nickel defense get used a lot.

At linebacker and safety, an unusual high number of tackles can be caused by any combination of:

1. Having especially good athleticism to make plays that other players wouldn't make (good).

2. Being the standout defensive athlete on a team that plays at an unusually fast pace on offense (likely good).

3. Being the standout athlete on a defense that can't get off the field (good...ish?)

4. Playing on a team that schemes to funnel the running game to one particular player (netural).

5. Giving up a ton of completions in coverage (bad).

#1, #2, #3 and obviously #5 can apply to slot corners, but as far as I know, #4 never does.

I always enjoyed and valued Alex both in college and the CFL. He will land well. Just hope its either the Chiefs or Seahawks or I'll have another team to root for.

Honestly not trying to start smack because I think Coyle is a great player, but is he on the same level as Singleton? I’m no LB coach or evaluator but to my untrained eye it always seemed like Singleton was like a man among boys where Coyle had a few standout plays and was very good but didn’t blow me away. And Coyle has been hanging around the NFL for years.
