Doesn’t matter what the NCAA rule says. Murray won’t play this year. Murray is not academically ineligible per the NCAA. It’s an MSU Athletics academic rule that he’s not meeting and is why he’s suspended. If MSU were just applying and following the NCAA rules, Murray would be playing. MSU, and I assume, many other schools requirements are above and beyond the NCAA rules. Time to move on.

I concur 2a , this feels internal to me , this shows to me that CAT Character Accountability Team means something .
That the Coach's care, and the kids I've got to visit with, in the program know this. What Parent doesn't want to hear from
a coach , Hey give us your Kid ,we'll keep em safe an offer every opportunity to become a successful adult and flourish
as a student. Good on MSU athletic's and especially the Football Program. Chris has a great opportunity to make a Life
decision and come through this a stronger person. And I wish him all the best in his challenge . These kind of things contribute
to the type of Kids that are coming to MSU Football. I like where this program is going.

With the new red-shirting rules, would he technically be allowed to play in 4 games, or is that only for incoming freshmen?
(I'm not advocating this, just wondering how the new red-shirt rule might be twisted)
Not eligible to play. So, no.
So, I ask again. If Murray is not ineligible academically, could the new red shirt rules allow him to play in 4 games?

If he was truly redshirting, then yes as this is what the rule states:

“Under the new redshirt rule, any incoming freshman, or player in general, who receives a redshirt can play in up to four games without sitting out the entire redshirt season. These games could happen early in the year or towards the end of the year, to be used at the program’s discretion. Should an injury occur, or a program’s season land in the toilet, the team can activate a redshirted player to its active roster, offering them playing time.”

But with Choate already stating that Murray will not be practicing or traveling with the team, it tells me it’s not really a redshirt as much as it is him being academically ineligible.

You may want to cite a source for your quote. I’m pretty sure the NCAA didn’t use the word “toilet” in their rule. Your statement seems accurate but it looks like someone’s interpretation of the rule and not the actual NCAA rule itself.
I think the actual rule is still getting finalized and implemented so it’s tough finding the actual NCAA rule verbatim. The question Rick had, I believe, was whether the new rule applied only to true redshirt freshman or if it also applies to any redshirt (freshman or otherwise).

This quote was the only one I could find where it actually referenced other players than just a true freshman, hence the reason I posted it. Initially, I thought the new rule would only apply to true freshman as it’s really intended to get them some playing time without burning a red shirt year, but now I’m not positive
The eligibility rules are spelled out in the Division I manual. The new manual for 2018-2019 apparently isn't released until August so should see the official wording of the changes then I would assume. For anyone interested in the old ruling you can look at section 12.8 of the 2017-2018 Division I manual: http://www.ncaapublications.com/p-4511- ... -2017.aspx

Well said @Cataholic. There's nothing for Chris to hang his head about here. He got handed a lot of stuff at an awfully young age. Many 18-year-olds are redshirted their first year just to get their feet on the ground academically, and to adjust from living away from home for the first time. Chris moved from big city Southern California to small town Montana, and athletes every year fail that transition. And a large percentage of students take five years to complete a degree, so nothing to be embarrassed about there. So good luck to Chris (and his family that Coach mentioned) in this "gap year" and come back more prepared to do classes, life, and football.

I've been wondering, does he get to keep his scholarship this year?
No offense, but ******. What Murray got handed was an opportunity, and responsibility. This is nobody’s fault But his own. When you can’t make the grades, and coaches/staff have to go to your classes to make sure you’re going too, that’s your own fault. Sometimes you have to have standards and can’t just say, “oh he’s young” “oh he’s busy”. Time to grow up and act like an adult.

He’s not ineligible “yet”. They don’t announce those things yet.

He was/is on pace to being ineligible. Make no doubts about that. They’re just jumping the gun because they know he can’t fix his grades in time. Sugarcoat or spin however you want, our starting QB couldn’t get his act together when it came to school. That’s flat out unacceptable.

Thanks to Rich K for starting a thread about this specific thing since this is a bit off topic for this thread. I've posted some more info that I found in regards to the rule change there: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=46237

Great response by Murray, hope he gets it figured out and is back and better than ever, and most importantly, earns a degree from MSU.

I’ve been there. Dropped out of college and joined the marines. I more prepared and more focused when I returned after my enlistment. Not everyone matriculates the same. I’m not saying he needs to join the service, just saying it worked for me.

Sadly, I do not believe we’ll see him suited up again.

I went one quarter after high school. Went to work for five years before returning. Then had to work full time, go to school full time but got involved with Army ROTC. Spent over 20 years with the Army, both active duty and reserves while working, coaching and school administration while picking up a masters and educational specialist degree.

Chris is still only 19, correct? Geezzz, he's got a long time compared to where I was at his age to figure out what he wants to do with his life.

I certainly hope he puts on a football uniform again, someplace whether for MSU or any number of other schools.

I'm excited to see Mr. Murray come back and prove he is FCS QB in 2019, this next year for him will be a big step in his life, dig in and get it done.

I hope it works out for him, as he represented us well. Let’s face it there are easier academic institutions out there that he could go to, get adequate grades and play. Hang your head high Chris, we asked a lot of you at such a young age and you were a major reason we are 2-0 against the griz in the Choate era. Best of luck and hopefully we will see you again.

Do we really think it’s grades? I’m guessing there is more to it. He probably got beat out buy one of the new guys and couldn’t handle it. I bet he transfers out.

Jesus. Come on man.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.
