We have a four star and two three star QBs competing for the spot along with Beltran and Andersen.

Stars mean jack ******, for the most part.

I think what he meant to say is past performance is no guarantee of future results.

As soon as I read the tweet, I got this sinking feeling that with Murray leaving MSU, he'll never be back. I'd love to have him back. I don't mean to be anti-Murray. But how often do guys leave and come back, vs. leaving and not coming back?

Anyway, I wish Murray the best no matter if he's here or elsewhere.
You’re right most guys that leave don’t come back. But most guys who leave don’t plan on coming back. So I wouldn’t put Murray in that group.
That would make an interesting study. Whether the data is worth getting published would be up to the journal editors but none-the-less, students who fail to transition from secondary to post-secondary environments and the subsequent maturation of initial drop-outs and eventual matriculation rates would make a fascinating read to most educators.

I'm looking at several variables thinking there's enough data available one could conceivably compare an entire population over a decade rather than limit the study to a sample, demographics being one variable and age another. Career choice comparing initial academic endeavors and pursuits versus ultimate decisions would obviously be another variable worth exploring. I know many of my former students initially chose "money" majors only to discover they hated doing the work, returned to school and pursued entirely different fields more in line with their interests rather than their aptitudes and subsequently excelled in their careers.

I believe the Power 5 schools debunk your position. The Group of 5 conferences and small college football may in fact validate your claim, partially. However, schools like Jacksonville State do pretty well with transfers from primarily the SEC that couldn't get much play time in the higher profile programs, so I don't really understand why you'd make this statement.

Star ratings don’t guarantee anything, but star-rated players out performed non-rated players at MSU from 2011 to 2016. Star rated players have contributed 28 out of 40 times (70%) to 48 of 109 (44%) for non-rated players.

Of our projected starters 13 are star rated, 11 aren’t. The 13 come from a pool about 1/3rd the size of the 11.

Oh?

Mac Bignell? How many stars did he have?
How about Troy Andersen? Schreibeis? Daly?

Stars are cool because it’s a way to rank players. But there are how many 3* players each year? Almost 1,500 players. Almost 2,000 2* players. Almost 300,000 unranked players that go on to play college football. You think people are watching that much film?

What happens is HS “analysts” see who does well at summer camps, and which players are offered by big schools. I’ve seen a 2* recruit go to a 4* recruit in a week because Alabama offered. And that’s ok, that’s a good way to do it. But it certainly is flawed.

More and more players are ranked than there were 10 years ago. But once they’re in school, especially after a few years, nobody cares what they were ranked. The most recent #1 pick started his career off as a walk-on. Sure Jonsen was a 4* recruit, but more recently he was a backup at Oregon and a backup at JUCO. That matters more to me than being a 4* recruit.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again and again, watch the tape. Don’t just trust a random rankings system. Trust. The. Tape.

That must be why Alabama/Georgia/Clemson/Ohio State/USC are always such bottom-feeders.

Do you think they scour the top 250 to see who’s a good player or not?

More often, the rankings reflect which team has offered whom.

I don't think you've taught or coached in a state like Georgia, Texas or Florida, have you?

Wow, it took 10 pages for this thread to devolve. Usually that happens after 5.

Cool, yet another debate about recruiting stars in a thread that has absolutely nothing to do about recruiting. Must be the off season.

Murray’s statement was contrite and heartfelt (to me.) I think he truly regrets getting in the position he’s in.

But forget football for a minute and remember his education is about Chris Murray the man. I’d rather he take the time to get things right for his long-term success at life.

If he can come back and play for the Cats again, it will show a strength of character that can only make him a better football player.

Remember how the last four-star QB turned out?

Then again, Dakota Prukop got three stars, and he was alright.

Yes, I recall all of that. My point is that with so many highly touted players vying for the spot you’d think one of them is going to work out. Shotgun approach. We’ve had three star-rated QBs prior to the three aforementioned in Prukop 3, Roderick 2 and Bruggman 4. Prukop beat out Roderick.

Roderick was a pretty good receiver. Underutilized.

CAT Fans:

What we forget in a case like Chris is that football is mostly human and partly athletic. Chris will have a 2nd chance and we will all see what happens. I do know that coming into college, being young and immature, it is difficult to manage football, weight training, school, classes, getting to bed and getting up in the morning.

I thought I was in 7th heaven as a BOBCAT and all I had to do was play football, go to weights, eat and sleep. First semester, I got a 5 credit F in College Algebra and a 5 credit D in Economics. I should not have been placed in either of those. Once it was so deep, I gave up and quit going to class. Luckily I got A's in the rest of my classes and survived. However, it was without scrutiny from Coach Sonny Holland. He asked me why I didn't like MSU and being a BOBCAT. I said why. He said if you don't get your butt in gear in classroom, YOU WILL BE GONE..

A lot of changes and adjustments from high school to college football. Chris either didn't understand the commitment, over his head, didn't take college seriously. But none of that matters now. We have to deal with it as humans and Bobcat fans. My hope is Chris reloads and comes back to the CATS>

I keep thinking of what a backfield would be like with Troy Andersen at RB.....Chris Murray as slot/wildcat, a smart, agile, athletic qb who can throw. Not going to happen. But I hope Troy gets a shot a RB stud. He could be another Chad Newell, or Cody Kirk. We can be solid on defense. We need strength and power on offense.

Any way good luck to Chris next year. Hope you come back. I still don't think QB is your spot and who knows? Don't give up on yourself and CATS FANS will never give up on you, EVER. Good luck and stay in touch.

I thought the profile on Murray in the 2017 Bobcat Football Magazine was really good. He came across as smart and articulate, not like someone who wasn't paying attention in class.

I wouldn’t say he was underutilized. He just didn’t earn it.
