I'm just not going to get excited about any recruits until fall camp starts from now on, sheesh.

no kidding. You could take that further and say, don't get excited about any players until they start their Sophomore or Redshirt Freshman year (at least)... the amount of kids that either don't ever show up, or take off after their first semester is pretty crazy...

Maybe that is part of the reason that Choate prefers to sign like 40 guys every year... ha. just assuming that 20% of them will not make it past the first couple months (or even show up at all).

I've wondered if part of the attrition is because of Choate's recruiting strategy. Is he creating more attrition by signing too many guys, by offering so many kids?

There would need to be circumstances, legal trouble for example, for a coach to cancel a NLI. Brown's decision could simply be personal. He might just need to stay close to home.

Not sure why there’s so much angst about this. When’s the last time someone didn’t show and then turned out to be good? Most go the JC route and that’s it or they play D2.

anyone know what happened to Malik Putney (similar situation). I'm curious if he ended up getting on with another D1 program?

I think Putney ended up at San Mateo CC.

Well, for one, in some cases this is a scholarship that could've gone somewhere else. Not sure that is the case with Dom Brown as others are saying.

Well...if the coaches thought they were good enough to recruit to come here, and Brown is good enough, then don't you think that explains it?

I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. I liked his game. Clearly Choate did too.

Enrolling at Ventura College?

hmmm, well that blows.

kinda strange... I wonder if this was a choice on his part? An academic thing? or msu pulled the offer for some reason?...

I know that the coaches were VERY high on him, I remember choate saying that he had as much potential as anyone in this years class, and could have been an immediate contributor...
I doubt it’s academics since the post indicates he is a full qualifier. Might be something personal or he just doesn’t want to come to Montana. I had high hopes for him.

The kid is a player, he'll land a CC for a year, then get pick up by FBS school. IF he came here there is a very good chance he could have played right away, but we'll never know. We have have lots of talent on the team.

Where are you all getting this? He was a Feb commit with one offer?

Probably from Coach Choate.

I wish he hadn’t left, but I’m not as certain as some that he’s going to come in and start right away or relatively soon.

Following that “coaches thought “ logic, then the coaches feel the same way about everyone. I realize Choate had some glowing words about him, but he said “might”. I’ll be interested in seeing how much playing time he gets at Ventura and finding out why he left MSU. MSU brought in Bohannon and Zambrano, and has the Gibsons and Price pushing the starters.

Looking at this class of 34 signees and our current roster of 75-80 student athletes, makes me wonder how many players can participate in fall camp and how many can be on the roster once classes begin. As it stands now, it seems like we may be oversubscribed for roster spots. True?

Not likely, but it happens. MSU’s coaches are very upfront with players, so if something like that is going on it was probably addressed awhile ago.

FCS schools can split up scholarship money amongst 85 players. Athletic and academic scholarships all count against the 85 limit. The remainder are walkons. Walk ons are eligible for other financial aid. I believe the preseason practice roster is around 90 and once the season starts it’s around 105.

Yes there is a limit before schools starts(90-95?). The 105 number gets thrown around as an actual rule, but I don't think it is. That is just how many lockers we have. Nebraska comes to mind when roster size is questioned . https://nebraska.rivals.com/news/will-f ... -challenge I've joked before that we are are going to need more lockers and it will be interesting how many we have when the BAC is completed.
