Who we lose----needs
We lose---8 off defense & 5 off offense, plus our LS;
LOST to Graduation..... Possible Replacement (relatively new to 2-deep)
DB Bryson McCabe……….Ben Folsom
DB Khari Garcia…………….Keaton Anderson
DB West Wilson………….…maybe a transfer
CB Bryce Alley………………maybe a transfer
LB Jakob McCarthy……….Tad Gilman/Sean Opland
LB Mac Bignell……………..Jacob Hadley/Balue Chapman
DT Brandon Hayashi……..Elu Leota/maybe a transfer
DT Fou Polataivao………..Travis Yates/maybe a transfer
OL Dylan Mahoney……..….several to choose from or a transfer
OL Caleb Gillis……………….several to choose from or a transfer
WR Mitch Herbert…….……Payton Hanser/James Campbell
RB Nick LaSane……………..Jake Roper/Ed Vander
WR Justin Paige……….…..D’Agostino if OK’d to play after injury
LS Rocky Hogue…………..…Logan Macdonald
I don’t like transfers generally, but certainly the exceptions are Bryson McCabe, Alex Neale, Jake Roper, Ed Vander, JoJo Henderson, Luke May, where they have 3 years or more to play. But that's not to say that players like Jabari Johnson, with only 2 years of eligibility, don't have an immediate impact. Be interesting to see what transfers are brought in, whether from JC's or dropdowns.

Cole and Thomas have already proven they are capable of stepping up with Alley gone.

Agreed - will be interesting to see what coaches do with him because he is no slouch at the WLB spot.bobcat99 wrote:Konkol would be the most likely replacement for McCabe imo.
Some True Freshman to keep an eye out for in the Spring who may have sorta been 'forgotten' but could start or be in the 2-deep are
Chad Kanow - WLB/Buck
Sean Hatten - T
Connor Wood - G
James Campbell - WR (have heard great things about how fast he is)
Tadan Gilman - LB (have heard he is one of the best)
Jaxen Hashley - DT (maybe moved to OT)
Travis Yates - DT
Kyle Rygg - DE

Yeah, I agree with what both of you are saying. I was just trying to come up with who would be added to next year's 2-deep rather than a specific replacement at a given position. For example, James Campbell would most likely be more of a replacement for Paige than D'Agostino, and D'Agostino more for Herbert. As far as the secondary, I can see both Folsom and Keaton Anderson being on the 2-deep along with Thomas and Cole, but at what specific position I don't know, more likely at safety than corner I suspect.bobcat99 wrote:Konkol would be the most likely replacement for McCabe imo.

I suspect a lot of what happens on D will hinge on several guys. Andersen, LB or RB? Hadley LB, or Buck? Chapman, can he stay healthy? If all of those guys can play, Konkol may slide back to safety. If Hadley plays Buck does Collins move back to LB? Lots of shuffling possible this off season. Although we lose Herbert, I'm really excited to get Johnny D back. He's a great possession guy and has some great hops.

I agree, I think depending on the guys that didn’t play this years development, as well as transfers, we will see some guys shift positions. Collins and Konkol being the most likely imo.
I’m really curious how the early signing period affects EVERYTHING this year. If some of our top recruits sign in December we probably don’t go after transfers in those positions, if they don’t sign we may go after other non signed guys that we thought where “committed” to other teams. Or decide a transfer is the best option. December should get really interesting for teams 2018 depth charts across the country.
Regardless I can’t see us not go hard after a pass rush specialist as a transfer

D'Agastino is a slot imo, or at least that's his best position. I really hope we look for a transfer WR. Tough sell when we don't pass well though.
I would expect to see Anderson and Konkol as our starting safeties. Cole and Thomas as our CB's. Folsom will probly be the backup S, but idk how much he plays. Luke Mays is a wildcard there too.
I would expect some combination of Hill, Hadley, and Kanow to start at LB. Could easily slot in Chapman or Gilman too. Hadley could play DE, but then you have to bench Marks or Collins. Wright, Benson, Yates, Yates (who can also play DE) and Elu will be a nice DT rotation. If we keep James Williams, he will be very hard to keep off the field. Our defense should be better next year.

I did too. Mostly because he was hurt the 2nd half of the year. But he was great when he played.bobcat99 wrote:Shoot I forgot Henderson. He's a definite starter.iaafan wrote:Didn’t Luke May move to safety? JoJo Henderson can play safety.

I agree with you regarding Cole and Thomas as being CB's. I was referring to Folsom & Anderson....I don't know what safety position Folsom will play or if Anderson will be safety (likely) but I think there may be a possibility of him being somewhere in the CB rotation if needed.bobcat99 wrote:Yeah I don't quite agree. The MICKSTER wrote:Yeah, I agree with what both of you are saying. Regarding the DT position: Both starters Yates and Wright return, also have Chase Benson right behind them. If he continues to progress, he could even push for a starting spot. Also the other Yates (big time recruit) coming off redshirt year. We lose a couple quality backups to graduation... but otherwise I expect this to be a VERY strong position.

Re: Who we lose----needs
Could Hadley possibly be moved to buck, if he can rush the passer? We desperately need some speed there. He's listed at 220 so he'd have to put on 15 pounds or so, or just be a pass rush specialist on third down.

Re: Who we lose----needs
question-
At CB, is that Gardenhire (not sure on sp?) officially done for sure? Or is there still a chance he could get back on the team?
Not trying to derail the thread here, and i'm not saying I want him back or not... just curious what the official word was on that?
Side note- but I am EXTREMELY confident in the CB position moving forward with Thomas and Cole, they are gonna be huge these next couple years.

Re: Who we lose----needs
Our #1 need is a dominant pass rusher. I love Marks and maybe he develops into that guy but I am not sure he will. I hope we have someone on the team that is developing into that but if we don't we need to go out and get one. I think that was our main reason we were dismal on 3rd down and also why we were dead last or near dead last in interceptions.
Our #2 need - and one could make a very strong argument that it is our #1 need is good QB. Maybe our guys develop into that guy but if they don't we will not be better next year - at least not significantly. I don't see Murray improving enough but who knows. I really would like to see him at WR. I can't imagine trying to tackle him in the open field. I hope he doesn't end up the #2 QB not have any time to gel as WR.
Looking at our commits that we have our biggest needs for this recruiting class (not necessarily for immediate playing time) is big O'linemen. I think we only have one committed now and I would like to see at least 2 more.
