Former Cat Linebacker Clay Bignell
Clay served as a grad assistant defensive coach for Notre Dame last season. He's on the ND coaches roster serving in the same capacity again this year.

Fun fact.
Clay very much wanted to coach at MSU, reached out to the HC, and was very succinctly told no.

Which head coach? Choate or Vigen? I assume Vigen, but wanted to clarify.

Choate. Would’ve been as a position coach.saintcat40 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 5:09 pm@BelligerentBobcat

I’m sure he had his reasons, but it’s still a head scratcher. No different than Böbbäë Häüçk firing a former player already on the coaching staff when he was rehired. Can’t recall precisely, but I think it was Marcus Ferriter.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 5:33 pmChoate. Marcus played for MSU, it was Mike Ferriter he was the wide receiver coach then went to ISU and was the OC.Cledus wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 10:37 pmI’m sure he had his reasons, but it’s still a head scratcher. Re: Former Cat Linebacker Clay Bignell
Is it really a headscratcher? Choate had no prior relationship with Clay and may have simply had another coach in mind already for the position Clay was interested in. It's nice for fans to have former players on staff but being a former player is also by no means a guarantee of being hired by a head coach you've never worked with before.Cledus wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 10:37 pmI’m sure he had his reasons, but it’s still a head scratcher. Re: Former Cat Linebacker Clay Bignell
Yes, it absolutely, 100% is a headscratcher for me. Choate surrounded himself with assistants and coaches who have ties to and understand the importance of the Cat griz rivalry. It doesn't get much better than a former player. That, and at least give Bignell an informal interview and devote a few minutes to discussing his philosophy to see if it aligns with his goals for the program before saying no.MSU01 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 8:14 amIs it really a headscratcher? There is nothing about what I just said that should be controversial. If we recruit athletes with no position in mind there is nothing unreasonable about the same approach when hiring coaches. Sometimes, you're #1 candidate goes out and does something stupid like getting a DUI, so it's good to have options.

That's right. I knew it was Ferriter and started with an M but forgot the rest. It got me to thinking what happened to him since Hawkins was hired.msufaithful wrote: ↑Wed Dec 13, 2023 7:54 amMarcus played for MSU, it was Mike Ferriter he was the wide receiver coach then went to ISU and was the OC.Cledus wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 10:37 pmI’m sure he had his reasons, but it’s still a head scratcher. It’s clearly worked out better for Clay. I hope he does well. Seems like some really high caliber coaches have great things to say about him.

Would Clay and Kane be on a list of future head coach candidates? Not sure if that’s their aspiration but I assume most coaches want to be head coaches.
