First off, I like that we are bringing in a top QB recruit per class. We cannot have a situation like we had last year where our next best option was a 17-year old freshman with raw talent but zero experience. I would gladly take an EWU situation over the past three years where the QB competition is between three top signal callers and the best man wins. Second, I would guess Murray, Rovig, McChesney, and future commit Bauman our safe bets to stay at QB. Kamden Brown is a PWO and needs to beat out McChesney in the future years to make the team in my opinion. We will see what we have in Luke May this fall and next year but if the writing is on the wall, he is too good of an athlete to keep off the field on offense or defense. Luke was an excellent secondary player in high school and loves to hit. As for Callahan O'Reilly, he has a body you can develop at positions other than QB. At 6'3", 210 lbs., he could be a TE or OLB (two positions he played well in high school).Hawks86 wrote:What's the scholarship breakdown? So he reminds you of Tom Brady?
Brady 6-4, 225
Bauman 6-5, 218

I don't think its any secret we're looking for a pro-style QB, since we are trying to run a pro-style offense.catsrback76 wrote:In case you are wondering what kind of QB Coach Choate is wanting, just look at the ones he's recruited. Long tall, pocket passing, strong arms!

At this point MSU needs someone at QB that can make plays at crucial points regardless of style. When your team needs to make a play somebody or somebody's need to do that.
MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Re: Casey Bauman WA QB commits
Honestly, I see Murray having not only the starting spot this year, but also the greatest pressure to develop as an all round QB. I did not see anything in Spring so I can't comment on "how far he has come", but, he has strong talent right below him on the chart who can play the game Choate wants to play at QB. Murray is going to always be a key to our offensive success either as a QB, or as a position X player!luckyirishguy25 wrote:I don't think its any secret we're looking for a pro-style QB, since we are trying to run a pro-style offense.catsrback76 wrote:In case you are wondering what kind of QB Coach Choate is wanting, just look at the ones he's recruited. I do too, it sounds like he's having a great summer and really developing into a good passer. I like that we've brought in a few QB's, very talented ones at that, should make for interesting competition this fall.catsrback76 wrote:Honestly, I see Murray having not only the starting spot this year, but also the greatest pressure to develop as an all round QB. Not sure why everyone is writing Chris off as a potential pocket passer. He's got the arm. DeNarius is working on his feet and progressions. If he's developed properly he could start for 3 more years.

Don't get me wrong, the best case scenario in my mind is:WalkOn79 wrote:Not sure why everyone is writing Chris off as a potential pocket passer. He's got the arm. DeNarius is working on his feet and progressions. If he's developed properly he could start for 3 more years.
- Chris takes the next step this year and becomes our starter the next three years
- Tucker Rovig redshirts and is ready to step in as a junior after Chris graduates
- The rest of the QBs on the roster provide valuable competition and possibly compete for the #2 spot with Rovig

Re: Casey Bauman WA QB commits
I noticed three major mechanics issues with Chris last year that I wrote down. 1.) Elbow/Release was two low which elongates the release and can cause the ball to drift 2.) Opened up his opposite shoulder, again cause the ball to drift and lose velocity 3.) Too long of stride, leads to overthrows and long release (again). I snuck down to the sidelines at the Triangle Classic and saw all three "flaws" extremely improved. Take a look at the pic below from the spring scrimmage and you can see that tight, closed opposite shoulder. His release is much quicker and the improved accuracy is obvious. Now I am nowhere near the QB coach McGhee is so I can guarantee you that Murray will be a much more improved passer this year. Teaching new mechanics can feel awkward at first and it is all about repetitions at that point, but once it clicks, it is night and day. Murray has had plenty of reps with McGhee, excited to see the new product this fall.WalkOn79 wrote:Not sure why everyone is writing Chris off as a potential pocket passer. He's got the arm. Now with that being said, I absolutely fell in love with Rovig's film. I cannot believe he did not get offers from MWC and even the Pac-12. I think he looks like the complete package and is even a good athlete for such a polished passer, I was sure he was the qb of the future and we would utilize Murray elsewhere (you get the ball in your playmaker's hands wherever they line up on the field). THEN I saw Bauman's film.......wow! I was almost even a little bummed because of how high I was on Rovig (tongue in cheek, settle down), but this kid is the real deal. He can make all the throws, pretty advanced footwork for high school QB and a short quick release for such a long kid. Like VIM said, it is good to have the EWU problem, and injuries always happen but in my opinion, the QB cupboard is absolutely STACKED for the next 5 years.
