Drop Down Success Rate

Post by msucatzfan » Thu Apr 06, 2017 3:52 pm

In light of the University of Washington drop-downs being suspended (are they released yet?), I was thinking about how unsuccessful our program has been recently with drop downs. I was trying to think of successful drop downs we have had from a division 1 program, not counting Juco transfers? The first that comes to mind for me is Elvis Akpla, one of my all-time favorite bobcat receivers. Another is Bryson Keaton, who had a very strong few years for the cats. Who am I missing? It seems the norm for MSU lately is to have a highly touted drop down every year who ends up doing nothing on the field and then gets arrested and kicked off the team.

Other than Akpla and Keaton, who has worked out? Off the top of my mind, both UW corners are now suspended (or released?), Marcus Tappan was arrested and kicked off the team, I believe Anthony Knight was arrested and released, Garrett Mario was a dumpster fire and eventually released following an arrest,

Another one who seems to be working out very well is Alex Neale, he appears to be on track toward having a great career as a bobcat....

Mitch Griebel was a team captain. John Laidet was a two year starter. Beau Sandland got drafted. Tray Robinson was Big Sky Newcomer of the Year. Eryon Barnett was a two-year starter.

Not recent, but Ron East went from Oregon State to Columbia Basin to MSU.

In the interest of being fair, Walker was a grad transfer, not a true drop down.

It's still a drop down.

Patrick Carroll was solid last season as a grad transfer.

Grad transfer is just another name for drop down. Sure it may not be a drop down in rare cases but Walker dropped down through a grad transfer.

I think the point is made...some are winners, some are players, and some don't turn out. Just like the other kids who come to play. Keep the pipelines open!

If you went back the last 15 years for dropdowns you'd probably find a lot more busts than success stories. And I don't mean bust when a kid transfers, doesn't exactly light the world on fire but still sticks around and contributes. A bust comes in and either doesn't finish school, gets kicked off the team, or even transfers again.

We just haven't had a ton of luck here but we've definitely had some great players come from FBS.

Wasn't Michael Beach a transfer from UA like Jefferson and Wheaton?
