One thing that drove me crazy during the season was seeing all of that 3 step get rid of the ball stuff. They kept running that stuff but we did not seem to adjust by checking those guys at the line. The safties would seem to always give them 5-7 yards.

Agree, and from the sounds of things, we shouldn't expect anything different this year. Keep them in front of you, don't give up the big play, and let them do whatever the F they want between the 20's... and then stiffen up and just don't let them get a TD. I'm OK with that. This also explains the challenges the D lines face nowadays. Out of 300 drop backs we only had legit shots at 40 some sacks? That's crazy, but I get it. As Beck says... the lines are basically being taken out of the equation.

The lines are being taken out of the pass game, but not the run game. And our D got run on a LOT last year.

^This! Our run defense did not help out our pass defense one bit.

I thought Beck was making excuses. He blames the lack of sacks on the opportunities. Well our opponents run the same offense against every other BSC team and so why did they have 2X or 3X the number of sacks?

That's a solid question. Montana had a similar schedule and they ended the year with 45 sacks compared to our 19. I'm not suggesting it's on the DL, it's a team thing. The corners need to be better on the outside, the LB's need to be better underneath, the Safeties need to make some plays. Part of it is on the players, but the coaches need to better job of scheming and game planning.

Team/Games/Sacks/Yards

1. Montana 14 45 241
2. North Dakota 12 34 256
3. Idaho State 12 29 171
4. Eastern Washington 14 27 141
5. Portland State 12 26 171
6. Southern Utah 12 23 127
7. Northern Arizona 12 21 121
8. Weber State 12 20 130
9. Montana State 13 19 123
UC Davis 11 19 129
Sacramento State 12 19 104
12. Cal Poly 12 14 84
13. Northern Colorado 11 13 69

Also I agree that defenses are going to give up some yards, but our defense was second to last at 486 yards/game. We need to get A LOT better.

Yards/Game

1. North Dakota 12 1230 3023 818 4253 5.2 35 354.4
2. Montana 14 2073 2959 998 5032 5.0 33 359.4
3. Northern Arizona 12 2555 2127 788 4682 5.9 35 390.2
4. Cal Poly 12 2158 2808 823 4966 6.0 42 413.8
5. Northern Colorado 11 2301 2310 778 4611 5.9 38 419.2
6. Eastern Washington 14 2456 3730 1011 6186 6.1 56 441.9
7. Portland State 12 1930 3388 894 5318 5.9 48 443.2
8. Weber State 12 2579 2776 897 5355 6.0 45 446.2
9. Sacramento State 12 2270 3322 856 5592 6.5 55 466.0
10. Idaho State 12 2204 3493 961 5697 5.9 45 474.8
11. UC Davis 11 2197 3100 790 5297 6.7 53 481.5
12. Montana State 13 2508 3820 942 6328 6.7 53 486.8
13. Southern Utah 12 2868 3444 965 6312 6.5 55 526.0

Defense as of Nov 30, 2014.
PASSING YARDAGE............... MSU 2881 OPP 3571
Average Per Game............ MSU 240.1 OPP 297.6
Sacks and better pass defense would have helped. They threw for almost 60 yards a game more than the Cats. A few more interceptions could help too.

I am excited for the arrival of Joe Noatala. Watching his highlight link, I like how quick he gets around blocks. He's a little light but plays quick.

Early in film the guards, in more than one case, pull and he runs the back down from behind.

I don't see that he is better than who we have, but that he adds another dimension on the dline rotation.

Didn't he also say all sacks are coverage sacks? So maybe he means if the coverage was better MSU would have more opportunities.

MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

I'll even go further and say that the cushion our corners were giving, which allowed the QB to sling it to the receiver on the perimeter negating the DL.

Sounds like we're headed towards press/man, which is what most of us said needed to be done to defend the quick perimeter passes.

We have to take that away to stay ahead of the sticks in my opinion.
