Hot Springs at Westby/Grenora - 1:00 PM, Saturday, 11/19 (Plentywood, MT)

Hot Springs Key Players: QB Marco Degel, RB Trevor Paro, RB Kane Lawson, WR Blaine Carr

Westby/Grenora Key Players: QB Jeremiah Paine, WR Kade Guenther, WR Daulton Holecek, RB Brian Field

In a rematch of an earlier matchup, Hot Springs took Valier to task once again, winning 58-8. Hot Springs had won the earlier matchup during the regular season, 51-0. The game started with the two teams trading scores as Trevor Paro ran in an 11-yard score and Valier's Colton Wheeler returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards for a score. After another Paro touchdown run, Hot Springs took a 16-8 lead going into the 2nd quarter. Valier would get no closer as Hot Springs built a 36-8 lead at halftime. Valier would not score in the second half as Hot Springs' defense dominated, not allowing an offensive touchdown all day. RB Trevor Paro finished with five total touchdowns (4 rushing/1 passing), RB Kane Lawson (68 yards rushing) caught a pass & returned a fumble for a score, and QB Marco Degel (7/7 for 70 yards) threw two touchdowns to WR Sean Shea for the Savage Heat. Paro, who carried the ball 16 times for 174 yards, now has one more game to add to his All-Class total touchdown record of 130.

In another rematch of an earlier season matchup, Westby/Grenora got revenge over Bridger, winning 30-19. Bridger had beaten the Thunder, 32-20, earlier in the season. Westby/Grenora set the tone early, jumping out to a 14-0 lead by the end of the 1st quarter. Lineman Jeff Whitlow ran in a one yard touchdown for the game's first score and Jeremiah Paine found WR Kade Guenther for a 29-yard score. Bridger responded in the 2nd quarter with touchdown passes from Russell Zentner and Colter Zentner. Russell hit cousin Colby Zentner for an 8-yard score and Colter hit cousin Ryan Zentner for a 60-yard score but both scores were followed by missed extra points to make it 14-12 Thunder at halftime. Sophomore Thunder RB Brian Field found the endzone on a 2-yard run for the only score of the third quarter to put the home team up 22-12. In the 4th, Bridger started to find some momentum on offense, finishing off a nice drive with a Colter Zentner 5-yard run. The extra point made it 22-19. After stopping the Thunder offense once again, Bridger got the ball back and needed to go almost the length of the field to score the go-ahead points. The play of the game happened almost immediately as Brian Field stripped the QB and took the fumble 14 yards to the house. This put the home team up 30-19 with less than three minutes to play and the Thunder defense shut the door to advance to the title game.

To follow the bracket rotation, the East team hosts a West team and that is why Hot Springs is traveling the northeast corner of the state. However, Grenora is where the Thunder play their home games and the MHSA doesn't allow a state championship high school game to be played out of state. Since Grenora is in North Dakota and Westby doesn't have a legitimate field, the game will be held in Plentywood, MT. From Hot Springs to Plentywood, the closest route is 612 miles. The Savage Heat will get to see every part of the Hi-Line, that is for sure. Anyway, Westby/Grenora has the second best defense in 6-man with the first being Hot Springs. Both teams can tackle well and have good all-around athletes. The game will be decided by the Thunder's ability to respond to Hot Springs. The Savage Heat will get their points but Westby/Grenora is no slouch on offense themselves. On defense, you have to find a way to limit the duo of Trevor Paro and Kane Lawson. Those two are the cogs in the machine that is Hot Springs. For Hot Springs defensively, you need to limit the Jeremiah Paine to Kade Guenther connection and Brian Field on the ground. Both teams matchup depth-wise. Most people are calling this one to be a blowout but I think Westby/Grenora makes it interesting and this one comes down to the 4th quarter. But I just don't the Thunder can stop Trevor Paro or Kane Lawson for four quarters. Prediction: Hot Springs wins 46-30.
