Top-side of Bracket

Valier at Hot Springs - 1:00 PM, Saturday, 11/12

Hot Springs Key Players: QB Marco Degel, RB Trevor Paro, RB Kane Lawson, WR Blaine Carr

Valier Key Players: RB Isaac Ramos, QB Colton Christiaens, WR Trevor VandenBos, RB/WR Colton Wheeler

#1 ranked Hot Springs finished last Saturday 11 points short of 100 as they obliterated the Bainville Bulldogs, 89-19. A positive for the Bulldogs was that they hung a 19-spot on the Savage Heat in the 1st quarter...but Hot Springs scored 46 points in the opening frame. After the first period, Hot Springs scored 22, 15, and 6 in the next three quarters to improve to 11-0 and advance to the semifinals in the 2016 Class C 6-man playoffs. RB Kane Lawson had seven rushing touchdowns while RB Trevor Paro caught two scores and ran in another for the Savage Heat. Bainville RB Will South ran in a touchdown and caught a 64-yard touchdown from Trustin Holcomb, who also ran in the first score of the game (yes bainville had the lead). Hot Springs' opponent will be the Vailer Panthers, who won the closest and most exciting game of the quarterfinals over Richey/Lambert, 45-43. After two Colten Curry touchdown receptions from RB Colton Wheeler and QB Colton Christiaens, Wheeler stepped in front of a Fusion pass and returned it 58 yards for a score and a 20-0 Panther lead. Richey/Lambert got a score before half to make it 20-8 in favor of the home team. QB Kasey Watson ran in a 15-yard touchdown to open the 3rd quarter but Valier once again outscored the Fusion, 13-7, with another Wheeler-to-Curry touchdown throw (70 yards) along with an Isaac Ramos rush to make it 33-15 Valier lead heaing into the 4th quarter. After RL's Watson and Valier's Wheeler traded rushing touchdowns, Watson responded with another touchdown run and 9-yard touchdown pass to RB Jeff Scholla to close the gap to 39-34 in favor of Valier. But Wheeler returned the ensuing onside kickoff 40 yards to pad the Panther lead. Watson threw another touchdown pass to Bryce Reitz to make it 45-43 but Valier ran out the clock on the next possession to advance. Curry finished with three touchdown receptions while Colton Wheeler accounted for five total touchdowns. Fusion QB Kasey Watson totaled five touchdowns (3 rushing/2 passing). The semifinal matchup between Hot Springs and Valier will be a rematch as Valier lost to Hot Springs 51-0 earlier in the year. This was actually Hot Springs' closest game of the year...but that just really proves how good the Savage Heat are. Anyway, Valier definitely has a shot if they tackle better and find a way to score on the best defense in 6-man. Colton Wheeler has played great football as of late for Valier and Isaac Ramos will always be a sparkplug running back in the Panther backfield. But again it will be the same storyline for defenses facing Hot Springs: can you contain Trevor Paro and Kane Lawson. Both have had seven-touchdown games this year as they both are explosive. Hot Springs is on a mission and I don't see Valier stopping them. Prediction: Hot Springs wins 47-15.

Bottom-side of Bracket

Bridger at Westby/Grenora - 1:00 PM, Saturday, 11/12 (Grenora, ND)

Westby/Grenora Key Players: QB Jeremiah Paine, WR Kade Guenther, WR Daulton Holecek, RB Brian Field

Bridger Key Players: TE/DL Russell Zentner, WR/QB Colter Zentner, RB Ryan Zentner, QB/WR Colby Zentner

The Westby/Grenora Thunder jumped out to a 41-14 halftime lead en route to a 57-28 win over perennial playoff contender, Geraldine/Highwood. WR/KR Kade Guenther accounted for five touchdowns (2 receiving/1 rushing/1 kickoff return/1 interception return) while QB Jeremiah Paine threw four touchdown passes to lead the Thunder. Rival RB J.R. Spencer ran in two scores but the second one came when Westby/Grenora was already up 49-14 in the 3rd quarter. The Thunder have now won 10 straight games after an opening weekend loss to Bridger who coincidentally will be there semifinal opponent. The Scouts earned a 78-47 win over the Sunbelt Refiners though the final score did not indicate how close this game was. After a 14-12 1st quarter in favor of Bridger, the Scouts exploded for 30 points in the 2nd frame to take a 44-12 lead into halftime. However, Sunburst stormed back to come within 12 points halfway through the 4th quarter at 59-47. But Bridger scored the final 19 points to secure the win and setup the Westby/Grenora rematch. Bridger ATH Ryan Zentner caught six touchdown passes and threw for another while QB/WR Colter Zentner threw five touchdowns and ran in two more. Colby Zentner also threw three touchdown passes and had one receiving touchdown. Basically, the Zentner family did everything like they have all year for the Scouts. For the Refiners, QB Lane Lerum threw all seven touchdowns with four going to WR Treyton Pickering and three to WR Michael Buckley. I said Sunburst would be a tough out in this one and the Refiners battled. It was just a case of a better team winning in the end. As for the rematch game, Bridger will have their hands full with Westby/Grenora, which is an offense firing on all cylinders right now. In Bridger's 32-20 win over the Thunder in the first game of the year, two key players were out for the Thunder and the game was still tied during the 4th quarter. Two Thunder turnovers turned into two Bridger scores to make up the final score. Since that game, WG and Bridger have not lost a game. The biggest factor in this one will be turnovers because these two teams are pretty evenly matched. Physically, I think the Thunder have the advantage but I give a slight edge to the Scouts in the speed department. Prediction: Westby/Grenora wins 38-33.
