MT High School Football Rankings - Week 8

Post by VimSince03 » Thu Oct 13, 2016 3:38 pm

Class AA

1. Billings Senior (7-0)
2. Billings West (6-1)
3. Kalispell Glacier (6-1)
4. Bozeman (5-2)
5. Missoula Big Sky (4-3)
6. Missoula Sentinel (4-3)
7. Helena Capital (3-4)
8. Helena High (4-3)
9. CMR (3-4)
10. Kalispell Flathead (3-4)

Bozeman came to Billings last Friday looking to spoil Senior's undefeated record and prove to everyone that they are just as good as Senior. Well the exact opposite happened as Senior completely dominated the defending champs 43-9. It was a 15-6 Senior lead after quarter one but after that the Broncs did anything they wanted, leading 36-6 at halftime. Nathan Dick threw four touchdowns including three to Gabe Sulser who also had 14 catches for 270 yards and a rushing touchdown. Bozeman QB Callahan O'Reilly could only muster 179 yards passing on 32 attempts and scored the lone Hawks touchdown in the first quarter on a run. I think it is safe to say that Billings Senior is in a league of their own in Class AA. Billings Senior travels to CMR this Friday. The other undefeated team going into Week 7 was Kalispell Glacier but they definitely weren't as dominant as Senior and it showed last Friday night against CMR. The Wolfpack fell to the Rustlers 28-23 as they surrendered four touchdowns to CMR QB Lane Jensen. Glacier QB Tadan Gilman threw two first quarter touchdowns and scored another in the third but he definitely had his worst game of his senior season going 18 for 38 for 292 yards and turned the ball over three times. The offense missed out on opportunities throughout the night because of penalties and turnovers as the Wolfpack outgained the Rustlers 404-259. CMR held Glacier RB Drew Turner to only 69 yards on 24 carries. Kudos to CMR for keeping their season alive. However, they get rewarded by having to play Senior this Friday at home while Glacier welcomes Butte. In other action going on in Billings on Friday night, West beat Skyview 41-21 due in large part to the Deming twins. Bryson hooked up with Braydon for three touchdown passes and Bryson also caught a touchdown in the win. Skyview drew first blood on a Drew Keierleber 5 yard run but West rattled off 34 straight points before Skyview put up their next score. West improved to 6-1 and now has a chance at a top 2 seed and is currently sitting nicely in the run for a top 4 seed. Skyview is a team that will try to play spoiler for the final few weeks. West welcomes Sentinel this Friday (one of my games of the week). Missoula Big Sky got a forfeit win over Hellgate and they will welcome Billings Skyview this Friday. Missoula Sentinel played in their second overtime game in as many weeks, this time coming out on top beating Great Falls High 36-35. This came a week after falling to Glacier 63-62 in overtime the previous week. Mitch Roberts was excellent again, throwing for three touchdowns and running for another. His final touchdown of the night was followed up by a completed 2-point conversion throw to WR Ethan Jones for the win. With the exception of Nate Dick and Callahan O'Reilly, Mitch Roberts has been one of the best QB's in AA this year, especially in crunch time. GFH got three touchdowns out of QB Kevin Boes (no slouch himself) but much like the Bison's season so far, it just wasn't enough. The Bison have lost four games this year by three points or less. Sentinel will travel to Billings West this Friday in a huge game in terms of playoff implications. Helena Capital beat Helena High 3-0 last Friday in one of the more heated rivalries in AA. This was a defensive battle from the get-go but Helena High definitely had their chances. In the second half, Helena High had a 1st and goal inside the 10 twice and turned it over on downs both times, not electing to go for the field goal due to a lack of confidence in field goal kicking (TE Max Morris is the kicker). The Bengals outgained the Bruins 154-103 in the slugfest as Capital's Brian Buschini's 22 yard field goal proved to be the game winner in the second quarter. It was the first 3-0 score in the 45-game history of the rivalry. Helena gets a forfeit win vs. Hellgate this Friday while Capital welcomes Kalispell Flathead who is another team looking to stay in the playoff race. Speaking of Flathead, they earned a 14-7 win over Butte to keep their playoff hopes alive last Friday. Flathead QB Bridger Johnson threw for 228 yards and a touchdown in the win.

AA Player of the Week in Week 7: Billings Senior WR Gabe Sulser - 14 catches, 270 yards, 4 total touchdowns (3 receiving, 1 rushing)

Game(s) of the Week: Missoula Sentinel at Billings West (Big game for playoff implications for both teams in this one as both teams are in the running for a top 4 seed); Kalispell Flathead at Helena Capital (this is a big game for the lower end of the playoff seeds as both teams need a win to stay in the hunt)

Class A

1. Columbia Falls (6-0)
2. Dillon (5-1)
3. Sidney (6-1)
4. Billings Central (4-2)
5. Polson (5-1)
6. Belgrade (4-2)
7. Laurel (4-2)
8. Havre (5-2)
9. Lewistown (4-2)
10. Hamilton (4-3)

Teams in the conversation: Butte Central (4-3), Miles City (3-4)

Columbia Falls followed up their thrilling victory over Dillon with a 42-0 shutout of Whitefish in Northwestern A action. Dakota Bridwell accounted for five touchdowns in the win. On the season, Bridwell has 28 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions with a 64% completion rate along with over 1800 yards through the air. He has been helped by three talented receivers (Braxton Reiten, Trevor Hoerner, and Sean Miller) and a battering-ram FB in Logan Kolodejchuk. This Friday they travel to Polson for the Northwestern A crown. Dillon got back on the right track with a 42-7 win over Corvallis last Friday. They were up 35-0 at halftime on the heels of four rushing touchdowns and one passing touchdown from Troy Andersen. Not much to say as this one was dominated by the Beavers. Dillon welcomes Stevensville this Friday before traveling to Butte Central to finish up the regular season. In the game of the week in Class A, Sidney beat Billings Central, 23-14 to take total control of the #1 spot in Eastern A. Sidney got two rushing touchdowns out of RB Alec Lovegren and a field goal & kick off return from Jace Johnson in the victory. Billings Central got touchdowns from RB's Evan Barthel and Ben Voss. Sidney definitely was the better team last Friday as they appeared to be more physical than the Rams (which rarely happens) and the score could've been worse if not for a couple of bad missed opportunities. Regardless, Billings Central will welcome Miles City this Friday to get back on track in the Eastern A while Sidney travels to Glendive this Friday then welcomes Hardin to finish the season. Polson earned a 43-7 blowout victory over a decent Butte Central team. It was a common trend for Polson as QB Tanner Wilson threw a pair of touchdowns to WR Matt Rensvold and ran for three more. If you want to watch a good football game (especially if you live in the Flathead or Missoula area), travel to Polson to watch them play Columbia Falls for the Northwestern A crown. Belgrade earned a hard fought win over Havre, 33-26. The key to the game was Belgrade holding stud RB Jase Stokes to just 37 yards on 15 carries (he did score two touchdowns) and gaining 190 yards themselves. Havre almost pulled off a comeback on the arm of Trey Murphy who finished the night with 308 yards on 23-35 passing. Down 33-26, Murphy drove Havre 80 yards to the Panther 11 yard line but they turned it over on downs from there. The win almost guarantees Belgrade the Central A crown as I don't see them falling to Browning or Livingston. The loss means Havre will be playing for it's playoff hopes and the #2 seed in Central A at Lewistown this Friday. After losing Casey Cole for the season, Laurel responded with a 28-7 win over Miles City. Laurel's Jared Craig had a big night, finishing with three touchdowns (one on defense). Laurel will travel to Hardin this Friday before travelling to Billings Central in a game that likely will be for the #2 seed out of Central A. Lewistown defeated Stevensville 33-20 to keep their playoff hopes alive. They will welcome Havre this Friday for a big Central A game. Hamilton earned a 44-6 win over Frenchtown last Friday. QB Carson Rostad accounted for three touchdowns on the night. The Broncs have been a sneakily competitive team all year as their three losses are to Polson (14 points), Columbia Falls (14), and Dillon (35). If they can beat Butte Central this Friday, they will be the #2 seed out of the Southwestern A. Playoff hopes on the line all over Class A this Friday. A lot will be decided.

A Player of the Week in Week 7: Columbia Falls QB Dakota Bridwell - 317 yards passing, 5 total touchdowns (3 passing, 2 rushing); Polson QB Tanner Wilson - 201 yards rushing, 69 passing, 5 total touchdowns (3 rushing, 2 passing)

Game(s) of the Week: Columbia Falls at Polson (This one will be for the Northwestern A conference); Havre at Lewistown (for the #2 seed in Central A with playoff hopes on the line); Butte Central at Hamilton (for the #2 seed in Southwestern A with playoff hopes on the line)

Class B

1. Fairfield (6-0)
2. Missoula Loyola (6-0)
3. Huntley Project (6-0)
4. Baker (5-1)
5. Bigfork (7-0)
6. Shelby (6-0)
7. Colstrip (6-1)
8. Eureka (6-1)
9. Manhattan (5-1)
10. Whitehall (6-1)

Teams in the conversation: Conrad (3-3), Cut Bank (4-2), Forsyth (4-2), Glasgow (4-2), Malta (3-3), Ronan (4-3), Shepherd (4-2), Townsend (4-2)

Fairfield took care of business against Conrad, winning 46-7. Senior's Cantor Coverdell and Chandler Allen continue to do a bit of everything each game for the Eagles both offensively and defensively. Those two are obvious FCS talent in my opinion and they will be the difference makers down the stretch for Fairfield. Conrad couldn't matchup Fairfield's depth on both sides of the ball. Fairfield gained some much needed offensive momentum heading into their Week 8 matchup with undefeated Shelby this Friday, a game that will likely decide the #1 seed out of 1B. Missoula Loyola continued to dominate, beating conference foe Ronan 38-0 which basically earned the Rams the #1 seed out of the 7B. QB Kellen Round and RB/WR Jacob Byrne each scored two touchdowns for Loyola in the win. Loyola hits the road west this Friday to St. Ignatius for a conference matchup before finishing the year up against Florence. Huntley Project had a bye and will face Lodge Grass this Friday. Baker defeated Poplar, 42-7, last Friday on the heels of three touchdowns from Cleet Wrzesinksi. He caught two touchdown passes from Luke Gonsioroski and returned a third quarter kickoff 85 yards. Baker will welcome a feisty Shepherd Mustang squad that is trying to keep their playoff hopes alive. Bigfork earned a 48-6 win over Libby last Friday. The home team got four touchdowns from star RB Matt Farrier in the blowout. Bigfork will travel to Eureka this Friday for the 7B crown. Shelby improved to 6-0 by defeating Choteau 47-6. Shelby QB Aaron White threw for two touchdowns and ran in a pair on the night. The Coyotes outgained the Bulldogs 393 to 131. As stated above, Shelby will travel to Fairfield in a battle for the 1B crown. Colstrip earned an easy 62-14 victory over Lodge Grass last Friday. They travel to Forsyth this Friday as they need a win to keep their playoff hopes, and a shot at the #2 seed against Baker, alive. Eureka earned a 60-0 win over Troy last Friday as seven different players scored for the Lions. They get a chance to play for the 7B crown this Friday as they welcome Bigfork to town. Eureka's only loss this year was to Shelby, who has turned out to be one of the best teams in Class B. Should be a heck of a game. Manhattan comes off a bye to take on a hot Townsend squad, who is looking to stay alive in the 5B. Whitehall will be watching this one closely. Speaking of Whitehall, they responded to their loss to Manhattan with a 50-6 drubbing of Three Forks. The Trojans jumped out to a 36-0 first quarter lead and never looked back as QB Braden Larsen finished the game with 223 yards passing and five touchdowns.

B Player of the Week in Week 7: Deer Lodge QB Cade Benjamin - 185 yards rushing, 84 passing, 6 touchdowns (1 passing, 5 rushing)

Game(s) of the Week: Shelby at Fairfield (this one will be for all the marbles in 1B); Bigfork at Eureka (this one will be for the 7B crown); Manhattan at Townsend (If Manhattan wins, they have the inside track on the 5B crown but Townsend will be tough at home)

Class C (8-man)

1. Ennis (7-0)
2. Wibaux (6-0)
3. Belt (7-0)
4. Fairview (6-1)
5. Charlo (6-1)
6. DGS (6-1)
7. Cascade (6-1)
8. Twin Bridges (4-2)
9. Arlee (5-2)
10. Great Falls Central (6-1)

Teams in the conversation: Harlowton (5-2), Scobey (5-2), Victor (4-2)

Ennis went over 80 points for the second time this year as they beat Park City 80-14. The Mustangs were up 48-0 after one quarter of football as they scored literally every time they touched the ball. Ennis is scary good. They are one of the better teams Class C 8-man has had in a while as they really don't have any holes. They have about 4-5 guys on offense who can score at anytime and they have a big line for 8-man standards. 9 different players scored against Park City. Anyway, they finish up with games against Gardiner and Lone Peak and they should win each handily. They are the Billings Senior of Class C 8-man. No one is really close to them at this point. The #2 rated team, Wibaux, struggled against a mediocre Circle team but still pulled out a 40-36 win. RB Shawn Schaefferkoetter had 203 yards of offense but the Longhorns let the Wildcats hang around, giving up 22 4th quarter points. If Wibaux is going to be the team that will give Ennis the best shot, they will need to play much better than last Friday. The Longhorns can lock up the #1 seed in Eastern C against Culbertson this Saturday. The Belt Huskies continued their undefeated campaign by beating Simms 56-0. Belt got five touchdowns from star QB Harry Green. Belt travels to Great Falls Central this week for a Northern C showdown where Belt can lock up the Northern C with a win. Fairview took care of business against a good Scobey team, winning 70-20. Fairview had a lackluster past few weeks but Greg Hardy got his Warriors straightened out last weekend. The game was only 24-14 after three quarters but then the Warriors exploded for 34 4th quarter points. RB Taryn Candee had five touchdowns for the Warriors while QB Tanner Reynolds accounted for four. The win wrapped up the Warriors season and they will be the #2 seed out of the Eastern C for the playoffs. Charlo continued their strong 2016 campaign by pushing around Seeley Swan 64-14. The usual suspects did it all for the Vikings as QB Landers Smith, and RB Jared Doty accounted for five touchdowns. Charlo will welcome a hot Twin Bridges squad to town this Friday. Twin Bridges needs to win for playoff hopes while Charlo needs a win for the #1 seed in Western C. DGS gutted out a 47-28 win over Harlowton. The Bearcats got a big game out of RB Carson Norskog (what a name) who rushed for four touchdowns on the afternoon. Keelan Taber was the star for Harlowton with three rushing touchdowns of his own. The game was 34-6 DGS midway through the third quarter before the Engineers attempted a comeback. DGS will travel to Broadview-Lavina this Friday while Harlowton will travel to HMJG. Cascade remained in the Northern C race with a 58-12 win over Fort Benton. Cascade is already guaranteed a top three seed in the Northern C, even if they lose their final two games to Simms and Chinook (which likely won't happen). Twin Bridges has bounced back from opening the season with two conference losses, winning again last Friday over Arlee 47-16. The Falcons resurgence has a lot to do with star RB/LB Wesley Harshbarger's return. He scored four times against Arlee and was a force on defense. QB Chase Guinnane also threw three touchdowns. Arlee is sitting at 5-2 in conference while Twin Bridges needs to win one of their final two games against Charlo or Plains to have a shot at the playoffs. Great Falls Central beat Chinook 46-2- to move to 6-1 on the year. Like Cascade, they have guaranteed themselves a top three finish in the conference. They get their shot at Belt this weekend.

C 8-man Player of the Week in Week 7: Hobson-Moore-Judith Gap RB Jordan Nees - 9 touchdowns (8 rushing, 1 receiving)

Game(s) of the Week: Belt at Great Falls Central (Belt takes the Northern C crown with a win but a GFC win makes things interesting as their only loss is to Cascade who's only loss is to Belt); Twin Bridges at Charlo (Charlo wins and they are the Western C champs while the Falcons need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive)

Class C (6-man)

1. Hot Springs (7-0)
2. Bridger (7-0)
3. White Sulphur Springs (7-0)
4. Westby-Grenora (6-1)
5. Jordan (4-1)
6. Valier (5-1)
7. Valley Christian (5-1)
8. West Yellowstone (5-1)
9. Richey-Lambert (5-2)
10. Geraldine-Highwood (6-1)

Teams in the conversation: Bainville (5-2), Grass Range-Winnett (5-2), Reed Point-Rapelje (5-2), North Star (5-2)

Hot Springs continued it's dominance with a 74-6 win over previously unbeaten Valley Christian in conference. The RB duo of Trevor Paro and Kane Lawson combined for nine touchdowns on the day. Here is a nice article on Trevor Paro and his race for the Montana all-class touchdown record: http://406mtsports.com/high-school/foot ... 228f0.html. The Savage Heat will have to take on it's next undefeated conference opponent in White Sulpher Springs this Friday in a game that will decide the #1 seed out of the 6-man West. #2 Bridger earned a win over Reed Point-Rapelje, 50-0, last weekend. Colter Zentner accounted for five touchdowns (two passing, three rushing). The Scouts will travel to Grass Range-Winnett in a game that will decide the 6-man South. In the other battle of unbeatens in 6-man West, White Sulphur Springs took care of business against West Yellowstone, winning 44-14. WSS was up 31-8 at halftime. RB Dawson Clayton finished with four touchdowns for the Hornets. WSS gets their shot against Hot Springs this Friday for what essentially be a championship game in 6-man West. Westby-Grenora traveled north of the border to defeat Milestone, SK, 39-8. All of their points came in the first half as they started subbing in the second half. Thunder QB Jeremiah Paine threw four touchdowns. Westby-Grenora will travel to Jordan for a huge game in 6-man East. The winner will be the front-runner for the #1 seed in 6-man East. A thing to note on Westby-Grenora is that their only loss this year was to Bridger,32-20, and they didn't have one of their best players in that loss. No other team has gotten within 35 points of Bridger since that Week 1 win for the Scouts. Jordan got a bye last week and will be well rested for their matchup with Westby-Grenora. Valier has not lost since Week 1 (51-0 against Hot Springs) and they took control of the 6-man North with a 44-22 win over Big Sandy last Friday. Valier RB Isaac Ramos scored four rushing touchdowns in the win. A common theme in 6-man this weekend will be "conference championships" as Valier will welcome North Star to town, a team that is sitting at 4-1 in conference play (Valier is 5-0). Richey-Lambert pitched a shutout against Terry last Friday. RB/WR Jeff Scholla scored four touchdowns in the win. The Fusion's loss to Jordan hurts them in-conference as they are currently sitting in 3rd behind Westby-Grenora and Jordan. They travel to Savage this Friday and finish at Westby-Grenora. Geraldine-Highwood earned their sixth win of the season against Sunburst, 72-53. RB's Louis Aron and J.R. Spencer accounted for seven touchdowns in the win for the Rivals. GH will be playing close attention to the Valier vs. North Star game as the Rivals play Big Sandy this Friday and finish up against North Star. If GH wins out, they guarantee themselves a top two finish in 6-man North.

C 6-man Player of the Week in Week 7: Bainville QB Trustin Holcomb - 7 passing touchdowns

Game of the Week: White Sulphur Springs at Hot Springs (winner will have the inside track to first place in the 6-man West); Bridger at Grass Range-Winnett (winner of this one will have the inside track to first place in the 6-man South); Westby-Grenora at Jordan (winner will have the inside track to first place in the 6-man East)

Here are remaining games in AA for teams still in playoff hunt (and my prediction of final W/L record - put an L next to game I think they'll lose)

1. Billings Senior (7-0) CMR, Skyview, Hellgate* (3-0)
2. Billings West (6-1) Sentinel, GFH, Helena High (L) (2-1)
3. Kalispell Glacier (6-1) Butte, Flathead, Big Sky (L) (2-1)
4. Bozeman (5-2) GFH, CMR, Skyview (3-0)
5. Missoula Big Sky (4-3) Skyview, Capital (L), Glacier (2-1)
6. Missoula Sentinel (4-3) West (L), Hellgate*, Flathead (2-1)
7. Helena Capital (3-4) Flathead, Big Sky, Butte (3-0)
8. Helena High (4-3) Hellgate*, Butte, West (3-0)
9. CMR (3-4) Senior (L), Bozeman (L), GFH (1-2)
10. Kalispell Flathead (3-4) Capital, Glacier, Sentinel (0-3)

So my playoff prediction is this:
1. Billings Senior (10-0)
2. Kalispell Glacier (8-2)
2. Billings West (8-2)
2. Bozeman (8-2)
5. Helena High (7-3)
6. Missoula Sentinel (6-4)
6. Helena Capital (6-4)
6. Missoula Big Sky (6-4)

Very messy in terms of tiebreakers, I think.

And Fergus beats Havre. Fergus will most likely roll Browning next week which should give Fergus 2nd in the Central A.

After watching last night there is little doubt that Fergus will crush Browning, but I believe with the win over Havre they have already clinched the 2 seed in the Central A.

Yep. It appears CMR put up a good fight yesterday though. Glacier rebounded back to form last night. They looked much sharper than last weekend.

Eureka versus Bigfork was a defensive slugfest for the 1st half. Wet conditions led to an above average number of fumbles and INT's. Bigfork's QB got injured on a INT return at the end of the first half when the score was tied 6-6. He remained down on the field for quite a while. He stayed on the bench for the remainder of the game that I saw with ice on the back of his neck. After the half, it was all Eureka. Joe Fehr and Owen Davis are a wrecking crew of a D line for Eureka.
