Lindenwood University Lions and Jamie Marshall

Post by Mr Lisle » Mon Jun 19, 2017 1:20 pm

Former MSU DC Jamie Marshall was hired last year to take over the D-Line at Lindenwood. Lindenwood has recently suffered some tough going, especially on defense. 2013-2016 they gave up an average of 30,30,32 and 34 points-per game and a 11-31 overall record. Coach Marshall was promoted to defensive coordinator for the 2017 season. We know well his history at MSU. There were some memorable seasons, but some blame much of the eventual decline of the Cat defense on him. But that's yesterday's newspaper and I...cursed with a morbid curiosity, will be watching Lindenwood weekly for the next few seasons. In the spirit of "once a Bobcat-always a Bobcat" I am wishing Coach Marshall well in his attempt to turn the defense around. There are at the onset some interesting things to look at. Lindenwood had long been a member of the NAIA before becoming a provisional member of NCAA D2 in 2012. They are now members of the MidAmerican Conference which includes some D2 powerhouses like Pittsburg State plus Washburn, Central Oklahoma and Fort Hayes. They lost several key defensive players (good or bad), but have some huge guys on the defensive line. Huge like this..6'5" 275 DE and DT's at 6'3 290, 6' 310, 6'1 304 (former Arizona State), 5'10" 322, 6'2" 433... yes, CCCCXXXIII. Coach Marshall should be in hog heaven. There will be no need to be "gap-solid", because there will be no gaps. The roster of defensive backs looks promising. Have no feel for the LB's. For the 2016 season they brought in 36 transfers including 13 on defense.
This will probably end up a fun diversion for me and for a time I will likely become a vicarious fan of the Black and Gold Lions. :bag:

"Lindenwood Defense Shines in Spring Game". The first touchdown scored in the annual spring game was a 100 yard pass intercept return. The offense drilled on moving the ball from their own 1 yard line and suffered four safeties. Recent graduate, All-American linebacker Conner Harris signed a free agent contract with the NY Jets! =D^

With that defensive line, you could probably play cornerback...

Both the media and coaches preseason poll has Lindenwood at #9...in the conference.

Perhaps the other conference coaches are well aware of Marshalls bend, break and never get off the field philosophy.

Point well taken.
So what we need here is some simple baseline. The schedule this year looks identical to last year except they trade places.
L-wood went 3-8 and gave up 341 total points=31 ppg. Let's see what happens.
